Can some one please tell me the difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration?

In a country, let's say the United States for this example, what is the difference between a legal immigrant and an illegal immigrant?

ISH wants to know.

Didn't the ones with papers also cross the borders legally?

It seems like the ones without papers all violated international and US law by crossing the border unvetted without a visa to enter the country.

Why do these immigrants who wish to settle in America sneak in to the country illegally instead of following the rules? If they want to live in a country, they need to follow the laws of that country.

What about border crossing? Do legal immigrants and illegal immigrants do it differently? :confusedshrug:
