Greece recalls ambassador from Austria over EU refugees row

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/25/greece-wont-be-lebanon-of-europe-yannis-mouzalas-refugees-eu

Greece has recalled its ambassador to Austria amid growing tensions between the two countries over Vienna’s strong-arm approach to the handling of Europe’s migrant crisis.

Enraged at its exclusion from a mini-summit of Balkan states convened by Austria on Wednesday, Athens hit back denouncing what it described as diplomacy that had “roots in the 19th century”.

At the meeting nations along the migrant route agreed to step up restrictions, including closing borders, to stem the number of immigrants flowing into Europe, effectively stranding thousands in Greece.

Issuing a furious statement, the Greek foreign minister, Nikos Kotzias, said Athens had recalled its ambassador “to preserve friendly relations between the states and the people of Greece and Austria”.

The rest of Europe has opened its eyes. They were so open to the idea before, but now, many countries in Europe are saying '**** that'.

With the longest sea border in Europe and its proximity to Turkey, the EU member state says it cannot be blamed for being the main gateway into Europe of those fleeing war and mayhem in the Middle East.

Sure you can, you could send them right back.

With some 20,000 Afghans and other migrants trapped in the country following Macedonia’s snap decision to increase border controls on Sunday, the prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, threatened to veto EU agreements if action wasn’t taken to ameliorate the situation.

Oh shit, there's Afghans there? I was told it was just Syrians. Say whaaaaat?

The EU migration commissioner, Dimitris Avramopoulos said on Thursday that unless the flow of migration weakened in the next 10 days, “there is risk the whole system will completely break down.”

The numerous splits in Europe over immigration policy were fully evident in Wednesday’s Vienna meeting, which was unilaterally called by Austria and snubbed both the Germans and the Greeks.

just yesterday, thousands of migrants used battering rams to break down fences to try and escape into northern Europe. Greece's neighbors see whats happening, and want no part of it, so Greece is stuck taking care of thousands upon thousands of immigrants.

EU members opposed to German-backed refugee quotas and the Turkey pact instead want to quarantine Greece and seal the country’s northern border with Macedonia, effectively shifting the border-free Schengen zone’s external frontier from the Aegean to central Europe. Eastern Europe, Austria and Slovenia want to help Macedonia close the Greek border.

Greece has been overrun with trash, so the rest of Europe is about to seal it off. :lol :lol :lol :lol

Europeans... we tried to tell you all, but you wanted to be inclusive and diverse and wanted to be seen as the 'caring' type. Now you change your mind? Too late, you're already ****ed.

:applause:

Already divided over what to do about mass immigration, the EU faces further fragmentation as governments rush to impose national border controls from central Europe down to the Balkans, leaving Greece as the entry and end point for many migrants entering the EU from Turkey.

After Austria’s decision last week to allow in no more than 80 asylum seekers daily, Slovenia is following suit and sending troops to its frontier with Croatia, while Belgium announced new border controls with France this week.

Lololololololol. Greece has been written off. Sorry guys. I'd have liked to visit there one day too. Guess I can forget about that one.

Greece needs a Greek version of David IV to rise up and retake Constantinople and Cyprus from the genocidal Turks.

The media really showed its shameless bias in portraying them all as "refugees" in the first place. As soon as they leave Turkey they are no longer refugees but economic migrants, and should be treated as such. But yeah, they managed to manipulate soft-hearted wimmin without any brain activity into their typical response of "omg we need to do something, it's so unfair."

I just don't understand how the media lumped in Egyptians and Moroccans and Pakistanis and Algerians and Tunisians in with the Syrians.:facepalm :facepalm :facepalm

It's like lefties think all non-white people are the same.

I also don't understand why people are now trying to pretend there isn't a difference between legal and illegal immigration.

If I sailed a boat to the Norwegian coast and landed it on a beach and then settled in Norway, that does not make me a legal Norwegian citizen with the right to work and settle in Norway.

Why does the media expect Europe and America to take these people in?

it is absolutely insane how long this has been happening.

The Greeks don't even like this guy. Their hero is the 2.8 PPG scrub Spanoulis who couldn't even win a starting spot ahead of Rafer Alston and Luther Head.

Giannis the NBA stud and future super star is not well-liked in Greece.

Is that why they are trying to charge $3.50 for their small yogurts and 10 dollars for one of their quarts? Its outta control in the grocery isle. I guess they need to prop up their currency by inflating their goods.

Would you say that Alexander self identified more as a Greek or as a Macedonian? :confusedshrug: I love learning history facts but don't know much about Alexander the Great.

The Macedon military tactics were different from the rest of the Greeks (as were their weapons), though the other Greek states (excepting Sparta) started to imitate their methods shortly after they became the dominant force in Greece.

They were generally regarded as more backwards and less civilised than the other Greek states, probably in part because the rule of their kings was more absolute. There was a pretty clear distinction between the Macedonians and the rest of the Greeks (though they still weren't "barbarians" like all non-Greeks), so I would guess he associated as the former first. Alexander's mother was a real nasty piece of work; it's a marvel he turned out so well.

I believe that they did not consider themselves to be Greek, just like the Athenians and Spartans and members of other city states. They identified themselves by their city state and not as Greeks.
