View Full Version : Efficiency argument getting out of hand

Just because Player B is more efficient than Player A in less minutes, doesn't mean that B would put up better numbers than A with the same minutes.
For example, Wilt at 48 minutes is probably less efficient than Wilt at 36 minutes. That's because 36 minute Wilt would have been better rested, and it's easier to maintain higher levels of focus over smaller time frames.
And that's one reason why PER is an overrated stat. So now we have Curry having an amazing season, and people are saying it's the best offensive season of all time.
Well, if efficiency is the only argument that matters, then okay. But it doesn't mean that Curry would scale up with the same efficiency over an entire season (a few games doesn't count).
And it doesn't mean that Whiteside would have blocked more shots than Mutombo or Wilt. Because maybe Whiteside can't play that many minutes.
Tiny Archibald had a 34 point, 11 assist season. He wasn't as efficient as Curry, but so what? He led the league in scoring and assists.

But the only reason Curry plays 34 minutes is because the Warriors blow out opponents by the end of the 3rd. They do that because Curry scores 40 in 3 quarters. That's more impressive than Wilt play 50 minutes a game, scoring 50 points while teams averaged 150 points a game.

Your argument works with Whiteside but not with Curry. Whiteside plays limited minutes because he has to, Curry plays limited minutes because he literally blows out the opposing team in 3 quarters or less.
We have seen what happens when Curry plays more minutes...his production stays the same or even gets better. Take a look his 4th quarter stats...they are the best in the league. Curry gets better as the game goes on.

"Efficiency" was out of hand the minute people literally created "advanced" stats just to make LeBron look good.

Nobody's playing 40+ minutes these days. It's probably been determined that optimal playing time for starters is in the 30-38 range. That and it helps develop your bench more.
They do that because Curry scores 40 in 3 quarters.
By 40 you mean 30.7 in 34 minutes.
That's more impressive than Wilt play 50 minutes a game, scoring 50 points while teams averaged 150 points a game.
By 150 you mean 121. The Warriors are averaging 115.4, btw.
Wilt averaged just over 1 point a game. Curry is less than 1. Wilt was 41.3% of the scoring. Steph is 26.7%.
You tell me who had a better scoring season.

I watched the entire game. It was an amazing performance. I wish some of Wilt's great performances were recorded and in high def. I believe he had a 73/38 game against Walt Bellamy. And a confirmed quadruple double game. Also a confirmed 20+ block game.
