View Full Version : In all honesty, Duncan is pretty overrated without Ginobli

In 08-09, the 3 seeded Spurs got absolutely creampied by the 6 seeded Mavs. Spurs were missing Manu Ginobli that series.

Duncan channeled his inner Lebron and scored 4 points in the closeout game (or was it the Game 4).

Also, Ginobli was the 04-05 true Finals MVP.

It was only 02-03 where Duncan put up a Dirk-like performance.

Don't forget the fact that it's been Tony Parker's team since he was Finals MVP in the 2007 Finals. And now the torch has been passed to the next generation, while Duncan hangs around getting 1st option credit for roleplayer contributions.

Yes he was never a great offensive player. He always needed a first option to carry him in the 4th quarter.

Actually its ironic that a Tom Brady d*ckslurper is in this thread because I consider Duncan to be the Tom Brady of basketball.

Meaning he's a player that benefited the most from playing with the GOAT coach in Popovich and the GOAT organization which never allowed him to have sh*tty or lottery supporting casts around him at any point during his career.

Basically the Spurs is one of those rare cases where the organization and the coaching/system are bigger than the one player.

You're starting to see it now as Duncan is basically an aging roleplayer and yet the Spurs are on pace to have the best record on their entire franchise history (not even the Twin Tower Spurs of the late 90s, or the Big 3 Spurs of the 2000s can make that claim, with a prime Duncan)

But Duncan vampires can still cling to the fact that their hero is still playing so they can pretend like he is the main reason for the Spurs success.

When Duncan retires I suspect the Spurs won't miss a beat and will continue to be a 50+ win team and perennial contenders for years to come, as will the Patriots once Brady starts to fall of and/or retires.

How about Pop without Duncan?

In the 00 Playoffs the 4th seed Spurs lost to the 5th seed Suns (who were without their best player in Jason Kidd) 3-1.

See how easy it is?

Anyway, Dimcam >>>>>>>> Dirk.

Basketball players have more impact than a Quaterback. The comparisons are always dumb because QB's can't get defensive stops and it's not their fault that Football is the ultimate team game.

If we draw parallels between the modern NBA and the modern NFL:

Duncan = Me.

Peyton = LeBron.

Manu has cost the Spurs as many championships as he has helped them win them.

Not sure about this, but he definitely dropped the ball in 2013. The amount of mental blunders he made in that series against the Heat was just outright painful to watch. He redeemed himself the following year though.

There's also Manu's foul on Dirk - Spurs up 3 with seconds to go, he tries to block Dirk at the rim. Just let him score and inbound the ball, make them foul you. His brain goes to mush when he's tired :banghead:

Manu has some of the greatest chokes in all of basketball history. And that has happened in multiple playoff series, where it cost the Spurs dearly.

In all fairness, Manu has been a much bigger choker than LeBron has, but the 4 championships he won seemed to make the media and most fans give him a free pass on it.

One wonders how the Spurs managed to win 5 championships if (according to you) Manu is such a choker and Duncan is so overrated.

Manu is not a choker - he is clutch and very competitive. His mind just goes mushy when he's tired. Duncan is not overrated especially in the eyes of the casual fan.
