Who has reigned the longest as commonly accepted GOAT?

To know this, we must know with some certainty who was generally accepted as GOAT and for how long. CavsFTW and Lazarus, plus others, we can use some help here with Russel and Wilt (try to be objective). Need your help with dates here. I will edit the chain of GOATs below once someone can show me exact times of GOAT status being awarded.

List of GOATs in NBA history:

1948-1955 - 7 years - George Mikan

1955-? - x years - Bill Russel

? - ? - x years - Wilt Chamberlain

1982 - 1984 - x years - Kareem

1984-1986 - 2 years - Larry Bird

1993-20xx - 26 years - Michael Jordan

Most people considered MJ goat after winning a ring on eye test alone, including guys like Bird. It was definitely a lock in 1992 Olympic games, when both Magic and Bird deferred. At the very latest it was 1993.

Wasn't there a period in 86 maybe where people seriously considered the possibility of bird being the GOAT?

Yes, I think so, there was one maybe two years were Bird played at such a high level. I will add it for further discussion.

Yup. Magic said to Larry 'There's a new sheriff in town.'

I am dead serious when I say that MJ might be the GOAT for eternity. I saw that guy play in my teen years and he left an impression on my like nothing before. If someone does come along that is on par with MJ, the world will just know. The eye test trumps all.

If the youngsters today saw MJ, they would just know too. MJ took more souls and made more alpha dog statements than any player in history AND IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE. He came, he saw, he conquered. As a fan of the game in the purist sense, I can say I was lucky because I saw what playing at the highest level looks like. And that alone inspires me to this day.

Thankfully for all NBA fans, they came in together and created their beautiful rivalry so neither could claim clear GOAT status during their battles.

Never played in a Game 7 doesn't mean anything. It also could mean he got eliminated early when his team wasn't winning that year.

And yes. Look at how people dismiss Wilt, etc. nowadays because of the perceived 'lack of competition' back in his day. People are already talking about Jordan being guarded by the likes of Craig Ehlo and such. Hell, in 10-15 years, people will say Lebron was just a typical NBA player in terms of physical skills as players in the future will probably be stronger and faster. Jordan will get downplayed like all the other past greats of their eras.

The bottom line is that relative to his competition at that time, MJ dominated. That's what people will look at in the future. Which guys dominated their competition.

WTF did Lebron do against his competition? Collude against it? Go 2/6? Lose against guys like Jason Terry, Kwahi, and Iggy? No one is impressed by any of this unless your some kid you never saw MJ play live.

I dont understand the criteria here for length. is this time frame from when they were considered the consensus overall GOAT? if so, then noone considered Jordan the GOAT during the first 3 peat.

Kareem was still heralded as the GOAT. the 2nd 3 peat is when Jordan had enough on his resume to make a case for himself as a potential GOAT.

Jordan with 1 3peat is Shaq status. top 5-7.

Wasn't there a period in 86 maybe where people seriously considered the possibility of bird being the GOAT?
Yes, Sports Illustrated March 3rd 1986 titled "As nearly perfect as you can get" with many coaches, players etc saying Bird was the greatest player ever. Dick Vitale's Basketball 86-87 by Preview Publishing on page 11 was titled "Who's the 2nd greatest player of all time?" (with a pic of Bird in the green uniform). Sports Illustrated again on March 21 of 1988 titled "A player for the ages" was about Red Auerbach declaring Bird was the best ever and the 1 guy he would take over Bill Russell for his team, So yes, your statement is true .
