There was recently a thread created ranking top 5 Hip Hop producers. Premo was the only DJ/Producer who appeared on every list. Does this definitively give Premo the GOAT status?
Trying to relate this to how posters say Jordan is definitively the GOAT basketball player. Is Premo #1 or is it subjective? Who is the #1?

Music would be more subjective than a sport.
I could find the true GOAT in a sport if you give me a time machine.
I'd take MJ and place him on every team in the NBA over the history of the league and see how he would do. Maybe he would lead his teams to a 80,000-40,000 record with 220 championships. And maybe Kareem would go 75,000-45,000 with 205 championships. And Shaq goes 70,000-50,000 with 195 championships. We could then basically say that MJ is the true GOAT.
You couldn't even do anything like that in music even if you had a time machine and limitless resources.
Now, I don't have a time machine obviously. But at least we have a definition for true GOAT (the scenario above). Music doesn't even have a definition of true GOAT like that.

But music wouldn't even have anything like that that we could try to give our best guess for.
They are both subject to body of work and an eye test.
The fact is you don't have a time machine so you will never know. That's why sports is just as subjective. I can see how you played out the scenarios you are already subjective to saying MJ so you skus the numbers to his favor. This is why I don't consider lists to be an effective measurement of greatness.
But in your time machine scenario, if it did play out I think most people would agree if you replaced any player with any player bigs have an extreme advantage.

I only have a few Hiphop CD and never dug that much into it, but Premier is a household name, even over here. Had a gig last year in a small club. Didn't get a flyer or notice of any kind and couldn't believe it afterwards.

A few years ago I would've killed someone for omitting him from the top spot, I was a blind stan.
What's changed?
He's not as multi dimensional as Dilla.
That's my only and main gripe with him. Every producer has a format/formula/sound.
Dilla is a chameleon that evolved and changed up his style a number of times. So technically speaking Dilla might be the GOAT.
But
One simply cannot deny Preemo's discography and influence.
So I suppose Preemo is the GOAT.

I dont think its close to as subjective....
you can talk about a bunch of factors in music, but eventually it all comes down to your ear and how you react to it. Taste thing.
