Dont think those are one and the same occupation. Architect has to know the technology inside-out and is responsible for planning, designing, setting development standards, while the developers are the ones under him, who actually follow his instruction and write code.

What's the point of these jobs if you aren't happy, sure you can buy whatever you want but that'll take years and hopefully you don't kill yourself by then :facepalm

So whats the difference?

They are both in the IT sector, but the architect is like the puppetmaster, directing everyone, delegating work around and etc. He is like a team leader but of a higher sort so to say.

Software engineer is just a better title for a programmer.

If thats engineer whats a developer? Engineers do exactly what an Architect do by your explanation.

The reason developers/architects/engineers end up some similar is because in smaller companies it's likely the job will essentially be done by one person. Where it starts to differentiate is on large scale projects for larger organisations where a developer just sits there writing the code while an architect is the one managing all the teams of devs and bringing it all together so it fits right and follows the overall plan and guidelines. On large scale things you have teams working on just one aspect of the overall end result so someone has to be up top making sure each part is coming together correctly.

At my work, we don't really have anyone who is labeled a "Engineer", but here is the basic breakdown...

Lets say your company is working on putting out a new application, here is the flow (in my experience at least)

Architects work from scratch to plan out how the best and most efficient way it would be to run the application in question, working with the business team to make sure it meets their needs. They would draw it out, and come up with the best way to make this application. These guys are the big *****, some of the architects at my work are super smart guys.

Developers will develop the Architects plan. Kinda self explanatory, they put the vision and design from the Architects into reality.

Engineers would be the ones who put the whole thing in motion. They would put the application through DEV, QA, and STAGE testing, finding any kinks or bugs and fixing them. Then eventually they put the application into production.

That's the basic movement at my work. The engineers are more split up into different groups though, we have QA team and STAGE team, then PROD is handled by different groups depending on what it is (web, linux app, windows app, iseries, store pos system).
Oh I see now. Thanks for the explanation.

Software Developer, Software Engineer, Programmer, these are mostly the same job. My job title is Senior Software Engineer and I 'develop software' by 'programming'.

I am responsible (with a team) for one application in a complex system. The Architect must have an overview of the entire system. Me and my peers design, code, test and review code of others for our individual application, but the entire system is far too complex for any single individual to understand in its entirety. The architect doesn't care about the minute details of how our application is written, only that it performs to the CPU, storage and memory restrictions he has placed for it.

I suppose it would be too much to ask for to have ISH inform you when there has been new posts when you've had the tab open for a while... :confusedshrug:

I think the reason why I spend so much time on ISH is because I'm nostalgic for the past and this site is like a virtual time machine
