View Full Version : How did Bill Clinton get a Rhodes Scholarship when he had an average GPA & 1020 SAT?

I always wondered how Clinton was able to secure a Rhodes Scholarship when he did not even graduate *** laude from Georgetown, and had really poor SATs, 200 points below even Dubya. I have seen a 3.42 GPA bantied about on the Web but nothing with a solid source. Can anyone shed any light on how he was able to obtain such a prestigious scholarship or why he was asked to leave Oxford before he completed his degree? Again I have seen two reasons he was asked to leave, one was poor performance, the other he sexually assaulted a 19 year old Eileen Wellstone but nothing with a solid source, so I'm extremely curious to hear from anyone who has researched this more.

it's not only based on academics

I understand. One of my HS friends was a RS. His GPA wasn't top tier either but he at least graduated CL. Ironically, he didn't complete his degree at Oxford either. Probably not that uncommon for activists.

Why would they worry about your SATs when you've already gone to college?
You can search for what they criteria are. Leadership and Energy are among them.

With a 3.4 at an exclusive university like Georgetown and this paragraph from Wiki, it's not too hard to believe he was a legit candidate:
With the aid of scholarships, Clinton attended the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., receiving a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (B.S.) degree in 1968. In 1964 and 1965 he won elections for class president.[10] From 1964 to 1967 he was an intern and then a clerk in the office of Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright.[3] While in college, he became a brother of co-ed service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega[11] and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Clinton was also a member of the Order of DeMolay,[12] a youth group affiliated with Freemasonry, but he never became a Freemason. He is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi honorary band fraternity.[13]
What's much stranger to me is that he was even able to get into Georgetown in the first place with that SAT.

It is strange but I assume standards were lower back then.

Grades are not truly reflective of ones intelligence, they are more reflective of one's ability to follow what the teachers says.
Those weak SAT scores are inexcusable though. The SAT was easy as shit. Even I got 99th percentile in every category except math, which I only got 72%
high school is mostly about memorization.
college is mostly about analyzing and presenting bullshit out of your ass.
