Frodo ultimately didn't come through and tried to pull an Isildur at the end. Frodo was clutch as hell until game 7 of the finals, when he choked hard. The ring was only destroyed because Gollum bit his finger with the ring on it off and it fell in the fires of mount doom.

Sam and Gollum pulled the most unexpected clutch performances, but that doesn't excuse the heroism of the other characters, even Gimli.

However you are correct, when the finals rolled around, Samwise stepped up in a big way, Iggy style, and is a well deserved Finals MVP for his overall level of play in the finals.

Sam got FMVP, Gandalf was COTY, Aragorn got regular season MVP. Gollum wins the MIP award.

Yeah, Sam at times literally carried Frodo through a majority of the story and I'd say that Gollum came through in the clutch since he's the reason the ring was even destroyed. Frodo would have snuck past Sam with the ring and never had destroyed it.
