Kobe was the media darling before the rape accusation. He already won 3 titles and was crowned to be the next Jordan. ESPN was searching for a guy to hype up after MJ retired and Kobe became that guy after the 1999-2000 season. He led the Lakers to victory when Shaq fouled out against the Pacers. He followed that up with 2 more titles and played like a top 5 player during those seasons. Kobe was a beast in the 2002-2003 season but the Lakers fell short against the Spurs. The summer of 2003 changed everything. That accusation caused ESPN to dump Kobe. Bran was drafted during that same summer. ESPN needed a guy to replace Kobe and Bran became that guy. Nike and ESPN has been hyping the guy since 2003. Stephen Curry's emergence has caused ESPN to finally move on from Bran.

I wouldn't say Kobe was a media darling before the Colorado thing happened. There was too much negativity towards Kobe in the sports world with the whole Shaq feud, Kobe wanting to be the man over the MDE. He was the number two to Shaq, who at the time was not just the biggest thing in basketball, but EXTREMELY marketable to the mainstream non basketball watcher. The one thing that I remember is that the Colorado thing made him really famous outside of the sports world. It made his name much more known. A good chunk of those new main stream people that now were more familiar with his name also probably thought he was innocent, since situations like that are always 50/50 with people taking sides. And people who were fans of him already, the vast would also probably think he was innocent.
