Rio was leading their bench unit and sparking them. He tore his Achilles and they cut him hours later. :facepalm

He was an expiring contract, waiving him was a smart move.

They needed the roster slot. I mean, they could have applied for an injury exception, but they already had one.

It isn't like Chalmers won't be getting his money.

They are going to the playoffs and needed to add a player on their roster so they could play more than their 7 healthy bodies.

Rio gets all his money and, will likely be voted,a,playoff share.

Furthermore, the team is going to the playoffs. Why do they owe a player who can't play and isn't under contract for next year more than their team and fan base?

While I don't like the move, it was the smart one for the Grizzlies to make. It's nothing personal, it's just business

Pistons could use him as a backup to Reggie. Blake needs to move to coaching or something.

Could the Pacers get him? They could use a better point guard.

After an Achilles tear? Good luck with that

This is pure business. He's done for the season, his contract is up this season... he's done with the team unless he chooses to resign. There was absolutely no point him holding a roster spot when he's getting paid either way. It affects neither of them financially unless the Grizz sign someone, then that's the cost.

So he either sits on the roster the rest of the season and becomes a free agent at the end of the season.
OR
He becomes a free agent now and still get's paid like he's on the roster.

Same outcome, he just becomes a free agent sooner by getting waived.
