View Full Version : How do you interpret the out of bounds rule?

is it who touched the ball last? or who caused the ball to go out?
you see the difference?

this is something that gets confusing especially in pick up games

for example

Player A strips the ball from player B

the ball goes to player A's team...

but a lot of times it technically rubbed player A's pinky last and should be player B's teams ball

whats the answer?

Hand is part of the ball, so if Player A hits player Bs hand while he has possession and it goes out, I call it out on Player A.

Now, if both are going for a loose ball (say a rebound), and Player A hits Player Bs hand and ball last touches Player B, it's out on Player B.

How I was taught to enforce it :confusedshrug:

This is dumb.

Interpret? There is only one way to interpret. If your team touches the ball last before it goes out the other team gets the ball.

This usually happens more when you see a guy catch a low thrown pass near the basket and tries bringing it up for a lay in and defender swipes downward to knock it out. As someone who played my whole life and now ref, you just understand that it's about impossible to make the call on who's fingertip last grazed the ball. It happens too fast and everyone knows the officials have to be subjective sometimes and better off just giving it back to whoever just got stripped or rejected.

The bolded.

There is no debate. It's set in stone. The person who touches it last.

If you see something happen like your player A and player B example, it is because the ref got the call wrong.
