View Full Version : What if Jim Buss hired Phil instead of MDA in 2012?
Kobe was the 3rd best player in the NBA during the 2012-2013 regular season. He averaged 27.3 PPG, 6.0 APG, 5.6 RPG on 46% FG. He was comparable to 1997-1998 Bulls Jordan who averaged 28.7 PPG, 3.5 APG, 5.8 RPG on 46% FG.
I think Phil would have figured out a way for Dwight and Pau to play with each other effectively. Managing the conflict between Dwight and Kobe would have been child's play compared to managing to 3 Peat despite the Kobe and Shaq feud. I think the Lakers would have won the chip. Lakers would have probably swept the Heat in the Finals.

It's a shame the Lakers didn't do well in Kobe's last good year. He was amazing that season :applause:

Does Phil Jackson change the fact that Dwight and Nash played that entire season hurt?

Yeah. I knew Kobe's career was over when he tore his Achilles against the dubs. Stupid MDA was playing him way too many minutes. Phil and Kobe would have murked POP and Duncan in the playoffs like they usually do. Then Bran would have been shook to play Kobe in the Finals. A repeat of his 2011 NBA Finals performance would have been likely.

Nash pretty much missed the season. Dwight averaged 17.1 PPG 12.4 RPG and 2.4 blocks per game. The worst part about all of this is that Dwight and Kobe requested Jim Buss to hire Phil. They were on the same page about that and Phil would have kept them on the same page on the court as well.

Does Phil Jackson change the fact that Dwight in 2013 played worse than Bynum in 2012, and yet that 2012 team collapsed in the postseason vs. Dallas?
Bynum: 19/12/2 59TS% 112 ORtg 100 DRtg 23 PER
Dwight: 17/12/2 57TS% 105 ORtg 100 DRtg 19 PER
I don't even need to get into how shitty Dwight is as an offensive player and how he'd be worse than Bynum in the triangle.

'98 MJ was still a top tier defender, BTW. Kobe was Harden at best on the defensive end.
You got jokes though. I'll give you that.

Lakers would be at best a second round exit.

Considering that the last time Phil coached the Lakers Dirk was sticking a broom up Kobe's ass to the tune of a 36 point beat down, I would say the Lakers MAYBE win 3 more games.

Should've given Phil anything he wanted. Anything.
Kobe's career is saved.
Lakers may win another title.
R.I.P. Jim Buss. (And Jerry)

Lakers would do better but I don't see championship. That team was too old and lacked defense. Gasol, Kobe and Nash were bad defenders (though Kobe wasn't as bad as the other 2), Artest was liability offensively and Dwight regressed after his back injury (he wasn't effective in the offense, wasn't so good defensively).
The bench was old too Blake and Jamison specially. Earl Clark, Jordan Hill and Meeks were good reserves but nothing great.

2012-2013 Kobe was way better than 2010-2011 Kobe. Kobe was injured that season and didn't even practice with the team. That was before he got orthokine therapy for his knee.
