Microsoft is announcing a big new feature for Xbox owners today: cross-network play. It's something the software giant has hinted at for years, and now it seems the reality of PS4, Xbox One, and PC players playing the same game together might finally happen. Developers building games for Xbox One and Windows 10 will be able to support the feature, but it will require Sony and others to "participate" in order for games to be played across Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Rocket League will be one of the first titles to support the new cross-network play, and Microsoft notes there is an "open invitation for other networks to participate as well," strongly hinting that Sony or other console manufacturers could enable gamers to play their friends regardless of what device they're using.
If developers and console makers get behind Microsoft's support of cross-network play then it will change the shape of games in the future. Currently, console gamers are restricted to playing titles on the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live, and many pick an Xbox One or PS4 based on what their friends purchased. Opening up online multiplayer gaming across different platforms will remove a big restriction in console gaming, but it will also create a conversation around which titles should allow PC gamers to play against consoles. A mouse and keyboard can still have many advantages over a gamepad for first-person shooters, so it's a new challenge that game developers will have to balance for cross-network play.

The Globalist takeover begins. This is the beginning of the end for game platform nationality.

Smart move by Team Xbox. They are essentially saying, "Hey Playstation. Look how big our cocks are. You in on this three sum or what?"
Balls in Playstation's court.

Yup, people also are still having sex in this day and age.
Just because you don't play video games nor can't get laid doesn't mean nobody else can
Saw this. Great job by Microsoft opening up that portal. Playstation will be forced to do it now because they actually listen to their fans.

It's a big dick move by Microsoft
If Sony doesn't do it, they'll look weak and corporate greedy.

Xbox relied on people buying their shitty 360 system in order to play with friends. Now that the PS4 won the console war this time around, they don't want to lose future market share for the same reasons. I'm not looking forward to paying PS Plus and Xbox Live subscriptions though, not happening.

Xbox was winning until the mid to late 2000's when Red Rings of Death ****ed them up

Technically you wouldn't need both. You can choose which system you want to use for exclusives and it'll work with friends who aren't on that console. Switch up every month or so

I honestly don't see why anyone would need to spend over $1k for gaming, and $1k is budgeting.. I guess the older I get I'm more fine with the advancements in console gaming than I would ever need to say "fck it, I'm going to pc gaming"
Also, does anyone know if it was ever implemented where either console and pc could of done cross gaming? I think there was one game or so that allowed it before this

Your move, Sony.
The game they are talking about has been PS4 <> PC cross-play since launch many months ago. It didn't take long for me to turn off that feature. Didn't add anything valuable to the game, but there were tons of hackers on the PC version and it was bad for lag.
Microsoft will hopefully be able to do PC <> Xbox integration better, but in many ways it's just an empty feature. No PC gamer is going to start using the awful Xbox for Windows store just so they can play with console gamers. And Microsoft isn't going to turn on this feature for their big games, because cross-play on HALO would be horrific for their console users.
