View Full Version : What players in the last 25 years had a SUDDEN drop off?

What players were good, and then the next season had a sudden extreme decline? I think of Karl Malone, I can't remember if its when he went from the Jazz to the Lakers or his next to last season on the Jazz, but he went from an all-star to a mediocre player in 1 year.

Andrew Bynum went from being an all-star and top 2 center in the league one season (2011-2012) to barely playing in Indiana/Cleveland (2013-2014) the next. That's the biggest drop-off I've ever seen in a player. He succumbed to injury woes. Hopefully his knees are better today.

Iverson.

As soon as he went to Detroit.

He also had a problem in that he wouldn't accept anything less than being the star. So, even though his ability from 2009-2011 coulda allowed him to be sixth man of the year, he wasn't having it.

Yeah, but Bynum's 2011-2012 season was the exception, not the rule.

He was always injury prone, so no one was really shocked by his eventual dropoff.

I dont thin k you're recalling Malones last season correctly. His production dipped because he he accepted being a 3rd fiddle/ role player... And also he was 40 freaking years old. Even still, that's not that bad all things considered. Before he busted his knee, he was productive given his role, and lakers were well on thier way to another ship. Whatever you saw in the playoffs was Malone playing injured.

Fun fact, his final season with the lakers was the only season he missed any significant time with an injury. Dude was the epitome of durability.

Kobe went from averaging 27 ppg in 12-13 to just 14 ppg in 13-14.

That is literally the biggest drop off I've ever seen, and I say that as a HUGE stan of his. :(

Yeah, when I read Malone I was like WTF :wtf:

Malone is one of the most durable players that aged well into his twilight.

Yup, even though in his press conference he was stating that hed be willing to do whatever it took too. That he didn't want to disrupt the chemistry that was already established with the current team. :facepalm

Malone was playing with Shaq, Kobe and Payton. Of course his numbers were gonna dip. That said, 13-8 is a very respectable average for a guy who was a far 3rd option. He could have averaged 18-20 if he was still the 1st option on a team.

Every star that plays with lebron will suddenly have a "sudden" drop off becoz leGM can't play off the ball. Just ask Love and Irving. :oldlol:

Umm Malone's stats were obviously were going to drop when he went to LA playing with Shaq, Kobe, and Payton. He went from 15 shots to 9, exactly what do you think would happen? He put up 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal at 40 years old.

AI was the worst dropoff. I remember a lot of my friends say that AI would make the pistons contenders again(at that time, it was logical).

AI was still good when he was traded to the Pistons, that organization was a mess after Big Ben left

Then he was blacklisted from the league for being an "troublemaker". Thought he was decent in his second stint in Philly and in Memphis, and at that time he had no problem coming of the bench

Kobe 2004 (last season with Shaq)

24 PTS, 6 TRB, 5 AST, 2 STL on 44% FG

Kobe 2005:

28 PTS, 6 TRB, 6 ASTon 43% FG

Kobe 2006:

35 PTS, 5 TRB, 5 AST, 2 STL on 45% FG

Kobe 2007:

32 PTS, 6 TRB, 5 AST, on 46% FG

Dat dropoff!

This thread has Lamar Odom written all over it.

6th Man of the Year, part of the best 3 big man rotation in basketball. Traded away after the CP3 veto fiasco, to the Maveriks for a bag of chips. All of a sudden, turned into an absolute scrub and tabloid fodder. He was pretty much a random tall guy walking on the court as if they pulled him out of the stands.

Worse yet, he became a huge distraction to his team.

Vin Baker and Glenn Robinson.

Not sure about Glenn Robinson, he was always a one dimensional scorer but Vin Baker I know went into a freefall after the lockout and never recovered with that alcoholism. Ironically the guy he got traded for, Shawn Kemp went downhill too he became fat and was just never the same.

Lawson and Odom are good shouts. Guys who declined due to age and/or injury shouldn't count. Lawson went from top 10ish PG to bench warmer. One of the most significant drop offs in the last decade. But I think he can still play, he just needs to dominate the ball like in Denver and not play off ball.

Richard Dumas: He was very talented and averaged 16 PPG in 27 MPG for the Suns his first year. When the Bulls had a 3-1 lead in the 93' Finals and it looked like the Bulls would wrap it up in 5 at home, Dumas had a huge game 5 and it went back to Phoenix for game 6. The Suns really choked away that game 6. They had a 4 point lead with about 40 seconds to go with the ball. Missed open jumper, Jordan takes it down full court for a layup to cut it to 2. Majerle shoots a wide open AIRBALL on the next trip, then Paxson hits the 3 to put Chicago ahead.

Then Dumas's personal demons took over.

Some lesser examples:

Christian Laettner was putting up 18 and 9 a game and made an all-star game. Then after an Achilles injury, I think he only averaged double digit scoring once again for the rest of his career.

Joe Smith was the #1 overall pick in 1995 and actually put up a solid rookie year, finishing 2nd in ROTY voting to Damon Stoudamire. The next year, he put up 19 and 8 a game. Then after that, it seemed like he was traded to a new team every year or two. His numbers didn't take gigantic drops but they were definitely down and he became a "bust".
