if its a 20 second time out you get a few more seconds of talking to your players instead of sitting there and waiting for them to all get to you

yeah. the seats are small and the players are big/tall. getting off the bench is a nice change

Coaches probably do it mostly to talk with their staff, Phil Jackson did it for a few other reasons as well, which will probably surprise you. It's worth 2 minutes listening to and includes a great anecdote about Shaq and his grandmother.
