View Full Version : Most underrated rappers

I was listening to Black Rob's album yesterday and it dawned on me how underrated he is.
He's not gonna make you rewind and look up Genius for the lyrics. But the dude is simply CONSISTENT as f*ck and dropped 3 great albums. He has an ear for selecting the right beats and is a good writer.
One of my all time favs is also Masta Ace. Just like with Black Rob he is CONSISTENT, never heard a weak line, always smooth and always a great writer. Both of them may not the craziest spitters, but can create great sounding albums with better than average writing. On the flip side you have dude's like Cannibus, Deck and Jadakiss that spit fire but can't drop a decent album.
Ace and Rob are two consistently good rappers, both better than average and good enough to hold their own. But the next two are GOAT level rappers that rarely get any mention as GOAT level rappers:
Black Thought
Ghost face
It's hard to think of an artist that has dropped as many quality albums in any genre as Ghost. The man continues to drop some great albums, and I can't think of any rapper that's dropped as many classics. He continues to drop heat even at the tail end of his career. But to top it all off he isn't just some dude dropping good albums, he spits fire, pure hot shit. His wordplay is ridiculous and few can match him.
I think Black Thought gets lost because The Roots don't appeal to the masses, had he been in the Wu or another more successful group, he'd be considered amongst the GOATS easily. Had he worked as a solo artist produced by Preemo he'd be a top 10 rapper. Black Thought is an emcee's MC, he spits bars, he rhymes, he writes great songs, and has maintained a consistent level of raw dopeness that's hard to match. Put him in a cypher right now against anyone, and he'd probably come out on top.
Yet those two dudes rarely get mentioned as top rappers and they certainly deserve to be in the top 10-15 convo, while Ace and Rob deserve more props.

Kool G Rap
One of my personal favs.
Only reason I don't think he's underrated is because he tends to be ranked as a top 10 from time to time... at least he used to.
Other rappers have mentioned him as an influence as well.
I have him in my top 10 that's for sure, he's someone that's cemented and aint going nowhere.

Rae is a monster. To have dudes talkin about Killarmy and Rae on ISH, it must be a good day.
Rae is one of those dudes who is consistent on his own albums but will kill someone on their own song.

Like when Slick Rick wanted to come back and prove he was still one of the best, goes in with various other artists but Rae just bodies him.

Most Wu Tang music is nonsensical gibberish, I don't consider random words strung together to be "good lyrics" just because they rhyme well.
People spend so much time trying to decipher their songs searching for deeper wisdom when there isn't any, it makes me laugh.

Nonsensical to you perhaps.
Yes it may take one a listen or two to catch and interpret what they said, but that is part of what makes them so ill. They simply aren't spitting gibberish for the sake of rhyming or flow. There is meaning to every word uttered. Even ODB's drunken style has meaning behind it.

That isn't completely true either.
The 5 percenter stuff is very lame and I am familiar with most of it since I've listened to a lot of their stuff (Gods and earths lol? Enough of the mumbo jumbo!)
Ghost himself has admitted that all of the cryptic lyrics on Supreme Clientele have no greater significance beyond filling empty space.

Salty Wu fanboys can't handle a dose of reality, I guess I shouldn't be surprised, you have that suicidal pvssy Capital Steez in your avatar (Lol, how old are you, man? That's some kiddie bs)

What do you mean realer than lol
Those young guys are just emulating the stuff they liked from the 90s, I wouldn't call that very original or captivating, it sucks.
And unlike you I don't live vicariously through people I don't know, what kind of loser would prop up a guy like joey badass and say "hes realer than anyone you listen to" haha.
He's not "realer" than me personally, sorry I'm not a soft wuss like you, tears falling into your lap as you quietly listen to Steez through your headphones. I don't give a fvck about anything else, that kid is little weirdo making dusty throwback songs that people aren't listening to because they aren't worthwhile, be my guest.
There is a difference between basing your entire style on gibberish and having a few struggle bars here and there.
It's not that big of a deal, I'm just clowning for the sake of it since you feel so high and mighty because you listen to garbage underground try hard rap.
I bet you think Aesop Rock is dope, too lol get outta here!

I love this topic. Black Thought is the ONLY MC who has gotten better after being in the game as long as he has been in it, which is at least 20-21 years. Some of the features he's been dropping lately are some of the BEST VERSES OF HIS CAREER, which is saying a lot. I will also add that The Roots might have the best discography in the history of rap, which makes Black Thought's underrated status make no sense. Never really been into Ghost like that though; just not my cup of tea.
Ras Kass used to be amazing. I feel like Soul on Ice is probably one of the best albums, lyrically, that I've ever heard. IMO better than illmatic, reasonable doubt, and even capital punishment. Lyrically speaking that is.
An underground nicca I mess with is Illogic. He's got some of the most poetic bars I've ever heard, and his album "Celestial Clockwork" should be regarded as an underground classic, but no one really knows about it.

You have horrible taste.
Angry pseudo intellectuals cramming as many words as they can into a single verse who are incapable of crafting a song with any sense of melodic structure, it's unbearable.
There is a reason why those guys aren't well known, they don't make good songs, they are just monotone ramblers.
Somehow that qualifies as "good rapping" to nerdy virgin white kids, go figure.
