Bill Russell dunks and puts the Celtics up by 10 with 30 seconds to go in G7 of the 1966 NBA Finals.

In those 30 seconds Jerry West scores 4 points, gets 1 steal straight out of Bill Russell's hands, forces 1 turnover, and makes an inbound assist to center LeRoy Ellis off a set play. A basket by guard Jim King completes the lead cut to 2.

The Lakers make a crucial error however, and fail to foul K.C. Jones on the final possession (it looks like they were gunning for another steal instead). Still exciting to watch Mr. Clutch play for every possession even as the chips were down. Celtics ultimately win their NBA record 8th consecutive title.

With a three point line that comeback could have been Reggie Milleresque (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjwKSwwcdyU).

I had seen this years ago and was in awe of West's hustle. His performances were proof of why, to me, Finals records and titles (almost) don't mean shit when it comes to evaluating a single player and why I don't consider it ridiculous for someone to have him as a top 10 GOAT.

Agreed 100%.

And we have seen examples of players winning a ring(s) with much worse performances than the several brilliant Finals that West put up, as well. I do find it somewhat ironic, though, that he finally won a ring with a very poor post-season run, and a horrific Finals.

Dude was probably the 3rd greatest Finals performer of all time after Jordan & Shaq

1962: 31/5/3 on 46%
1963: 30/7/5 on 49%
1965: 34/6/3 on 42%
1966: 34/6/5 on 52%
1968: 31/6/6 on 49%
1969: 38/5/7 on 49%
1970: 31/3/8 on 45%

I was thinking the same thing, with perhaps Magic and Russell in there as well.

In any case, it puts that ridiculous "1/9" in a much better perspective.

Edit...Forgot Russell.

So did West probably. I remember reading an interview of him around 20 years ago, where he had mentioned that he had played so awfully in that series that it had taken away some of his joy of having won it all. Seems like he came close multiple times to having Jordan-like seasons (which would have given him undisputed top 10 GOAT nods), only to have something ruin it all in the end, be it some close Game 7 defeat or some rare underperformance (1972 or certain 1973 games or game 7 of the '70 Finals).
