View Full Version : What type of diet do you eat

I try to get in 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight (The scientific research show this to be the optimal amount of protein for muscle synthesis)

Then I try and split the rest of my macros between fats and carbs

I recently noticed my diet had been lacking fats, which are importance for cholesterol and hormone function

I also eat in the mold of Intermittent fasting, which is essentially changing your
eating frequency, typically into a 16/8 split which implies, not eating for 16 hours, and eating all your caloric and macro needs in an 8 hour window.

I've been recently doing this, as it makes eating more enjoyable, and also it makes eating less easier for some... I've often fell asleep eating because I've left the eating too late.. But over doing this for awhile, I've become a more efficient eater and can consume big meals a lot faster. I also do this style of eating because there is a lot of scientific studies done in relation to the topic, that shows endocrine/hormonal and cognitive/neural benefits to eating with this style of frequency.

I don't really focus on so much as what I eat, more so how much I eat. I'm extremely macro oriented in a fitness sense... But I do understand that there is more to health than just numbers... Somewhere down the line I might give a vegan/plant based diet a try because there seems to be overwhelming scientific evidence that it is extremely good for preventing a lot of disease and illness... Great for arterial health and the prevention and decline of atherosclerosis..

Been cutting back on sugar lately. As in, buying less sugary cereals, and not buying sugary snacks with my own impulse or money, though I will gladly take a cake or snack if in some social event where it's being served. Years ago I cut back on sodium intake and the habits and awareness are still with me. Doing these things because I learn they contribute to heart disease, diabetes, etc. One small thing at a time, I'm looking for habitual changes when I approach my diet not extreme disciplines or regiments that are difficult to follow. I see women do that kind of diet all the time and they always fail so I go the slow and steady wins the race approach.

Cupcakes, cookies, ice cream, chips, pizza, nachos, poptarts, etc.

Salad on occasion. Steak everyday. 5000 calories a day, at least. Buttermilk pancakes with chocolate chips/syrup + chocolate milk and a banana is a go-to snack for me when I'm bored.

Ditched the paleo diet months ago. My dick is huge right now because my blood flow is back. I didn't have great blood flow without carbs. My dick is noticeably bigger and harder now.

I remember googling/asking that stuff when I started, I think 1-2 grams of protein per kilogram body weight was what you read most, forums always excaggerated.. 3-4 = way too much.

1 the minimum, 0.8 is whats being suggested for non active persons by the german party of nutrition (some Texas University changed this to 0.93), and 1-1.5 is for people who try to put on muscle.

I don't fck with this pound shit

Tarnopolsky et al. (1992) observed no differences in whole body protein synthesis or indexes of lean body mass in strength athletes consuming either 0.64g/lb or 1.10g/lb over a 2 week period. Protein oxidation did increase in the high protein group, indicating a nutrient overload.
• Walberg et al. (1988) found that 0.73g/lb was sufficient to maintain positive nitrogen balance in cutting weightlifters over a 7 day time period.
• Tarnopolsky et al. (1988) found that only 0.37g/lb was required to maintain positive nitrogen balance in elite bodybuilders (over 5 years of experience, possible previous use of androgens) over a 10 day period. 0.45g/lb was sufficient to maintain lean body mass in bodybuilders over a 2 week period. The authors suggested that 0.55g/lb was sufficient for bodybuilders.
• Lemon et al. (1992) found no differences in muscle mass or strength gains in novice bodybuilders consuming either 0.61g/lb or 1.19g/lb over a 4 week period. Based on nitrogen balance data, the authors recommended 0.75g/lb.
• Hoffman et al. (2006) found no differences in body composition, strength or resting hormonal concentrations in strength athletes consuming either 0.77g/lb or >0.91g/lb over a 3 month period.

There's a good quote on the ideal diet
"Eat, not alot, mostly plants"

The core of my diet is by eating plants and vegetables. I aim for atleast 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day but most days I get much more. Bannanas, Brocolli, Oranges, Kale, Tomatoes, Brocolli, Carrots, Onions, Flax & Chia seed, walnuts, etc.

I still eat meats but not as much as I used to. If you really need the protein you can add beans to your diet which will have as much protein as a serving as chicken.

i do the complete opposite.. sleep for 8 hours and eat every 2-3 hours in that 16 hour window (smaller meals).. works for me

Monday through Friday...

Breakfast: cup of green tea, banana, hard-boiled egg

I usually have a 2nd cup of green tea at 11am or so.

Lunch: a bowl of chopped veggies: cucumbers, baby carrots, celery, yellow bell peppers, broccoli, granny smith apple with some raw almonds sprinkled over...drink water.

Dinner: some piece of dead animal (chicken breast, beef, pork, fish...whatever's on sale), usually seasoned with whatever sounds good in the moment, a cup of white rice and a steamed veggie of some sort (corn, cauliflower, brussel sprouts or green beans are the usual suspects)...again, I drink water

Snacks: Trader Joe's black bean/quinoa tortilla chips with homemade pico de gallo (tomatoes, jalapenos, white onions, garlic, cilantro, lemon juice, salt/pepper)....or pita chips with Trader Joe's hummus (to which I usually add several dashes of either Cholula or Sriracha)

Considering I'm sleeping for 8 of the 16 it's not that bad

My body has adapted to the fasted state so the hungry feeling/chemical release doesn't really bother me... There's been some research showing specific benefits being in the fasted state... The running theory is an evolutionary adaptation, essentially saying mental focus/alertness and cognitive function heightens as a response to being hungry... Lots of people including myself feel this effect..,

Mainly just health benefits, specifically optimum regulation of hormones, optimizes fat burning... Good anti aging benefits too

Mainly though it makes eating fun af for me

I admittedly cheat on my diet often. I usually try to eat healthy for 3 days (8 meals healthy then one cheat meal that's slightly unhealthy). This past week due to a busy schedule, I had probably 7 or so cheatmeals instead of my normal 2 or 3.

My typical "healthy day":

Breakfast: Egg whites with bread for breakfast. Coffee
Lunch: Spinach w/ pasta, apple or 2 oranges, greek yogurt. Drink water through the day. Maybe get an iced tea with less sugar to get some energy for the rest of the day at work.
After work: Sometimes I will get a chicken wrap and some garlic knots at a local pizzeria.
1-2 hours later: Have dinner. Usually some healthy ethnic food of mine. Whenever I can, I will have salmon with either green veges or sweet potato.
Before bed: A bowl of cereal (honey oats) and 2-3 oranges.

I technically eat about 3 meals a day but with 2-3 snacks.

I workout about 3-4 times a week and I'm around 15% body fat last time I checked and I would say I'm in better shape now. I'm 5'8'' and I fluctuate from 165-168 all week.

Usually eat like complete crap. Try to hit my macros most days of the week but will have 1-2 days where I just don't give a shit and go crazy on fats. But these days its been Chipotle, Dunkin Donuts, and chicken and rice for dinner. Will try to fit a pint of ice cream in every other day.

It's tricky tho. For me it's hard to get absorb iron through anything but meat. I also don't feel as satisfied by non-meat protein.

I try to eat lots of spinach, carrots, apples, raisins, walnuts, etc. but I just don't have enough energy without meats and eggs and sugars.

Eating fruits and veggies throughout the day definitely helps keep hunger for other stuff down. But I don't think I could ever go vegetarian, or god forbid vegan. I just don't understand how people get by like that.

Breakfast: Dates or Couple Hard Boiled Eggs

Dinner: 3/4 plate some kind of veg, portion of fish or rice.

Drink two glasses of water mixed with greens.

Lunch is bread olive oil hummus or lentil soup.

Mondays and Thursdays no food or water from sunrise to sunset.
First 3 days of the month, the same.

What type of diet do you eat
- low salt and occasional dairy, like cheese for when i make pizza
- whole grains, lots of legumes
- a little processed and preserved food as a treat
- low inflammation food, pH on the alkaline side
- low sugar and low glycemic index
- full spectrum of antioxidants from fruits and veggies
- mainly vegetarian, but with fish, white meat, eggs about twice a week
- lots of healthy fats, like avocado, nuts and olives
- mega-doses of fish oil capsules as my main supplement
- lots of tea, and coffee as often as i can remember

all that took years to turn in to a habitual diet.

i still like to drink a lot and am addicted to spicy food. also, i'm lazy about buying organics.

Over the past year I've done the intermittent fasting as well whenever I am cutting and I must say, I really like it. I don't always do a full 16 hours like the OP, sometimes just 13-14 hours. I used to have the mentality of eat something (especially protein) every 2-3 hours, but I actually feel good while fasting, and then makes it so much easier to limit daily calories. After a few months of doing it consistently this summer I'd actually feel kinda shitty if I ate in the morning. I'd have a surprising amount of energy without eating.

Right now I'm cutting so this is pretty much my daily diet:

Morning: Green tea
Pre Gym: HMB or BCAA's and preworkout drink
Post Gym: recovery protein shake and 1/4 banana
Snack: 3 cups baby spinach, 3 ounces carrots and 1/2 an apple
Lunch: Greek Yogurt with strawberries
Snack: Greek yogurt with Kind Health Grains (Oats and quinoa and stuff)
Afternoon: Black Coffee with 1/4 tsp sugar and small chocolate chip cookie
Dinner: Plain Chicken breast with cup of grapes or a small plain baked potato
Snack: 2 eggs or protein shake
Cup Black tea

Sometimes will have a protein shake and oatmeal first thing in the morning if not doing IF

When done right this will give me about .8-1g protein per pound of body mass and keep calories for the day between 1400-1700

I was hesitant to try IF too but like you said, I feel great while doing it.

I'd suggest everyone give it a try just to see how you like it, if it's not for you then so be it, but don't dismiss it. Also, you don't have to do it any specific way, you can fast for 12, 15, 18 hours, whatever works for you, and choose to eat early or later in the day, whatever.

Hey thanks, I appreciate the info.

I don't eat it for the probiotics though, just as a good source of protein. There is a local Vermont brand I always get, 1 cup is 160 cal, 0 fat, 20 carb, 17 sugar and 20 protein, and no added junk like artificial sweeteners. I find the macros to be acceptable for my diet, but I have seen plenty of other brands that are just loaded with sugar so I certainly see your point

Salt negates sugar. Sugar is close in structure to snow. That's where snowcones come from. You see what salt does to snow. Melts it away. Feel free to double up on the carbs.

But stick to brown carbs. White carbs are bad. So eat chocolate, fudgicles, and brownies

Not as you grow older....( for most people)

I'm over 40 and have to eat healthy and work out everyday just to maintain a healthy build/ be able to play Full Court Basketball and just be able keep up with College athletes.

recap :Myself and Most people ( not everyone) have to work hard just to maintain a healthy body as we age.....If I didn't work hard ...there is NO WAY I would be able to play basketball with 20 - 24 year old athletes.

would have no speed or cardio.....
