C'mon Philly. C'mon.
Could have had surgery in the spring, delayed it until the fall so he could "enjoy the summer".

Its one thing to have a ton of young guys and not win. Its another to schedule surgeries so your best player misses the entire season. AGAIN.

Not every player is like that. I still am for guaranteed contracts.
The NBA owners make a killing on these men... the salary they give to player is less than the actual money being brought in from the players.
These are multi billionaires that are stingy with money. If they could pay players 10,000 a year, they'd do it in a heartbeat.

Too bad he's 7ft, athletic, and "has potential". Some dumbass GM will fall for the hype and Embiid can stay collecting paychecks for years to come.

Who cares what the owner makes? That doesnt effect the play on the court.
I dont care if a guy like Lebron or Dirk or CP3 who goes out and earns his money gets paid 100M a year.
But there are so many guys who get paid then **** their teams over. Its an insult to fans. The competition level would be WAY higher without guarantees. Theres no resson to support them as fans IMO. I dont need to play Robin Hood for other grown men.

It's a bit different if youve actually BEEN PLAYING tho.
Embiid has played zero pro minutes in two years making 5 million every year.
Youd think hed have some urgency to take care of his health business as soon as possible and be ready to have a chance to play.

Amazing there's a model doing almost everything right for the league staring right in their face, and the NBA keeps stubbornly ****ing itself in the ass.

He sure did. And got crucified. And that was when the surgery just cost him the first 3 weeks of the season, not the entire season as it did with Embiid. BTW, he won a title that season.
And you cats trying to get rid of guaranteed contracts are off your rockers.
The point here was that Philly was on board for this. They didn't say "NO" as they clearly should have.

First it's a rumor, 99% not true.
Second, if Embiid didn't had a guaranteed contract, Philly would have waived him? Really? Great example to use against guaranteed contracts!! lol
Third, damn another player having to go abroad to get respectable treatment.

Nothing prevents unguaranteed contracts.
You can offer it all you like, it's just that another team will happily guarantee those years.
The union already isn't the strongest, and some of you want to turn them into the shit show that's the NFLPA

It has nothing to do with racism you fcking idiot. It's about what's negotiated in the CBA.
And btw, the exact definition of a contract is a GUARANTEE from both sides. The NFL has holdouts. Do you really want an NBA where players like Steph Curry hold out the year because they are underpaid.
And for the last fcking time, not all contracts are guaranteed in the NBA. The teams offer them to the players on their own volition.

Teams cut players all the time. Grizzlies cut Mario Chalmers right after he tore his achilles.
Maybe they should make a rule that a player can't get cut after sustaining an injury.

Yeah, but the Grizz still have to pay him the remainder of his salary. Also, it's not even close to being the same situation. Dude delayed his surgery, because he wanted to "enjoy the summer". He hasn't stepped foot on the court yet and he has already made ~$9M and he's doing shit like this now.

[QUOTE]The team probably would have put Joel Embiid under the knife right away, but the fact that the 22-year old had just come off rehabbing from the first surgery influenced the Sixers to allow Embiid the time to regroup and mentally collect himself.
The process of rehab is not easy. The process of going through two major injuries before you start your dream career is not easy. The Philadelphia 76ers realized that and told Joel Embiid to take time and enjoy his summer. This was simply to allow the young man to grow as a person and shortly rest instead of rehabbing for two years straight.
Thinking this was some type of ploy to extend the rebuilding time is ignorant of the emotional stability of players that is too often overlooked. It

They should give Chalmers another contract. He got hurt playing for them. Paying the remainder of the contract is nothing compared to tearing an achilles. He may never be able to play again.
The Sixers knew exactly the risks of drafting Embiid. The only reason he fell to them is because of all the injuries. That was their choice. They could have passed on him.

Chalmers' contract is done. I'd want the Grizz to pay him, if he has like another year or two left, but he doesn't. He's basically a FA now.

Yeah, they didn't and Embiid shouldn't postpone his surgery to "enjoy the summer", when he's making ~$5M a season and hasn't played a SINGLE game in the NBA.

Who gives a shit if he didn't play a game? They knew he was injured when they drafted him. If he were able to play from day 1 he would have gone #1 and not been available to them. They knew the risk. They still control him for 5 more years, so it's not like they are not gonna get anything from him.
If he were faking an injury, then yea he should get grief. But he is legitimately injured, and teams do not have the power to tell anyone to have their body surgically operated on.
And the Sixers wouldn't cut him even if they could. They are banking their future on him.

That. Is. Not. The. Point. Read the title. Embiid delayed surgery last year "SO HE COULD ENJOY THE SUMMER". I could live with a top draft pick not playing dude to nagging injuries, but the due POSTPONED surgery to have "enjoy". That just shows how immature the guy is. I have no sympathy for those kinds of people. Making $5M a year without playing a game and not even trying to get healthy.

Smiling all the way to the bank until that contract is up.
76ers are being extremely cautious with Embiid and rightfully so, this is the same injury that Yao Ming and Big Z had. The truth is delaying the surgery in the summer didn't cost him or the sixers any thing, after he got reinjured the plan was for him to have surgery rehab and be ready for 16-17 season not summer league. The sixers will set restrictions on him and Brett Brown says the plan for him is to play back up C not to many minutes and possibly held out of back to back games.
And that 5 million a year doesn't bother sixers FO they knew he was inj when they drafted him and they barely reach the min cap.
I'm just excited to see what this teams does in the summer they have the assets to make some big moves.

And that's his choice. You can't force a player to get surgery. Not only is it unethical, it's immoral.
The Knicks couldn't stop Melo from playing last year, when he should've had surgery because he wanted to be in the All Star game. The players talk with their doctors and decide when THEY want to go under the knife.

i agree if anything NFL is one that needs guaranteed cash the most cuz of injuries. This doesn't prove they shouldn't have guaranteed contracts. If anything though there should be a penalty for delaying surgery for no good reason. I doubt it would ever happen otherwise but the 76ers are fine with it cuz they want to tank for their own stupid reasons. Not embiid's fault they let him get away with it.

Sixers have been getting paid by their fans for years to tank so it doesn't make any sense for people to be upset that they are paying Embiid not to play. If they had their choice Embiid would be healthy but they don't necessarily want him playing as he might help them win more games. They're fine with this, so why should anyone care? If you're a Sixer fan, stop being a Sixer fan. That's the only lesson here.

I swear ive never seen it take this long for a franchise to rebuild!!!!!!!!!!!!
we have seen the clippers and warriors struggle in past seasons but if you go back and look both franchises had brief glimmers of hope. Warriors had run dmc and the don nelson warriors, clippers looked great before shaun Livingston went down and even before that the trio of lamar odom, darius miles, and Quentin Richardson was very very fun to watch and were very close to contending just needed the right system.
Funny thing is even though the sixers suck they are literally one pick away from changing everything overnight......like in 96 when they drafted allen Iverson.

If you're a Sixer fan, stop being a Sixer fan. That's the only lesson here. It's ludicrous to think management doesn't want him playing to help their ping pong ball situation. They drafted him to be a franchise cornerstone. They'd rather him be lighting up the league like KAT is. You tank to be in a position to draft a potential superstar. If you have that guy, you can move forward. Their '14 draft set their franchise back now a full 2 years since Saric and Embiid haven't suited up yet.
Embiid was an injury risk come draft time and was looking pretty good in drills late last season. He ended up re-injuring his foot. Philly catches flack for being heartless to their players, but they let the guy consult current/past players and doctors while taking a mental break from rehab. I don't agree with how his entire comeback process has unfolded, but they're giving him every chance to heal.
Now they invested so much into him, management has to be as careful as possible. It makes them look weak and makes Embiid seem entitled, but that's the only way they can proceed. They need this dude healthy for 5-7 years. He's got a really long way to go before he's even a reliable backup, but maybe he pulls a Big Z and can come back from this.
