Shaquille O Neal is the number 1 guy I'd build around. If all 3 guys came out the same draft you have a guy that's truly dominant physically.
Gotterdammerung
03-23-2016, 02:38 PM
If I were to draft them, from the beginning of their careers, and I had a suckass lottery quality team, I'd pick LBJ or Shaq. They would help my team return to prominence faster than Duncan, even though he's almost as good as either LBJ or Shaq. LBJ & Shaq are once in a generation type of talent, enough to distort other teams' defenses into pretzels, allowing the other players on my team to flourish easier.
But if I had a strong front office and a team loaded with veterans, I'd go with Duncan. He would push my team over the top quicker than either LBJ or Shaq and win a championship earlier.

What the hell does accolades peak even mean?? Seriously man? And individual bball ability? You're gonna rank a guy who's nickname was "Mr. Fundamental" as the last of the three? The one who you could play a tape of to teach kids the right way to play basketball is the least one with individual bball ability?
Anyone who would take LeBron or Shaq over Duncan, starting a franchise from scratch, is crazy
The bullshit you have to deal with Shaq and LeBron, NEVER comes into the picture with Duncan.
From Shaq's weight and conditioning issues, and LeBron being a drama queen bitch...you don't have to worry about any of that with Duncan. Duncan doesn't do anything but show up, and play. And everyone else falls in line. That is beyond invaluable. Duncan made Pop's job so much easier of the last decade n half, and Pop has alluded to this many times.
The answer is Duncan.

I would take Shaq over Duncan in a heartbeat. Better peak and better prime. People overrate Duncan's prime, but Shaq averaged 25/11/3/2 on 58% for 17 years. 20/11/3/2 on 52% over 17 seasons for Timmy.
Anyone who ranks Timmy over Shaq needs to be shot. Shaq was unstoppable in his prime. Heck, ancient ass Shaq ruined PEAK Dwight. Shaq is a top 5 GOAT.
Shaq >>> Timmy.

What about their first 11 season (before they both dropped off noticeably) in the Playoffs?
25.5/12/3/2 for Shaq
23/12.5/3.5/2.5 for Duncan
Shaq ranks higher in most people's lists and for pretty good reasons. But your 'shot in the head' stuff is way over the top.
Those Playoff numbers are damn close, and Tim was the better defender. And he was about 100 times the leader Shaq was (Shaq was getting swept left, right and center from 95-99 and he treated it like it was a joke, he was a complete diva who feuded with numerous teammates and coaches). And he didn't miss an average of 15 games per season because he got injured all the time from being overweight.
These things mean stuff.

23/12.5/3.5/2.5 for Duncan
Duncan dropped of considerably averaged 13 PPG during one of those seasons. IIRC, he wasn't injured either.
First 14 seasons:
Shaq - 26/12/3/1/2 on 57%
Duncan - 22/12/3/1/3 on 50%
The numbers are the same for Shaq, even if you do it for the first 15 seasons.
First 16 seasons:
Shaq - 25/12/3/1/2 on 56%
Duncan - 21/12/3/1/2 on 50%
Those Playoff numbers are damn close, and Tim was the better defender.
Even those numbers with the 11 seasons aren't particularly close.

Shaq and Duncan have 3 FMVPs, Lebron 4 regular season MVP, sure he was better
Duncan got to finals like 6 times won 5, Shaq 5 times won 4, but Lebron is 3-9 in the finals... also that 2011 choke is unacceptable. Shaq was in Lakers for awhile and Duncan stayed with Spurs forever, LBJ leaves Cleveland and switched teams back and forth, also played in a weaker east conference (teams with a losing record can make the playoffs as I remembered?) with less contenders.
Once Lebron career is over maybe I will change my mind.
