View Full Version : In terms of pure league dominance, Bill Russell and LeBron are in their own league

LeBron - 5 straight Finals soon to be 6 straight

Russell - 8 straight finals

LeBron - Won his division 8 straight seasons

Russell - Won his division 5 straight seasons

They're both at the top in terms of dominating the league and winning, but who would you place ahead in terms of total league dominance? LeBron or Russell?

Um, 11 to 2?

Lebron is not even the winningest player among players he's played with.

Neither one of them dominated the league anything like Chamberlain did.

Interesting...

where does Magic and his 5/9 rank?

Or KAJ and his 6/10 rank?

Or West and his 1/9 rank?

Or Sam Jones and his 10/11 rank?

Or Hondo and his 8/8 rank?

There's a dude named MJ who catalysed his team to 6 championships in the 90's.
I think he might have a case.

Sam Jones and Hondo were on Russells teams, so they were grouped together

KAJ, Magic and West never made 5 straight finals like lebron and russell did

LeBron's on pace to literally double that (6 > 3)

Neither one of them dominated the league anything like Chamberlain did.

And we witnessed what a prime Chamberlain would accomplish with a roster that was the equal (and healthy) of Russell's in '67, as well.

Hell, we witnessed what a past-his-prime Wilt would do against a peak Kareem with similar rosters in '72. Keep in mind that KAJ's '71 team went 66-16, while Chamberlain's '71 team went 48-34.

Hondo won two rings post-Russell, and arguably was their best player on two more of Russell's teams.

Magic (and Kareem) went to seven Finals in eight seasons, with four straight. And it took a ridiculous best-of-three format to keep them from going to nine in ten (and likely winning six in that span.)

Magic colluded in a weak conference and diluted the talent pool by teaming up with KAJ

Russell and LeBron never had a teammate as good as KAJ

Plus Magic never made 5+ finals like LeBron and Russell did, which is an embarrassment when you look at the talent Magic had.

Just for the record, in the two years after KAJ retired, Magic's Lakers went 62-17 and 57-22 (in the game's Magic played), and yet another trip to the Finals.

And again, take away that ridiculous best-of-three format in '81, and Magic likely would have went to six straight Finals, and nine in ten seasons, and likely with six rings.

After this upcoming finals he'll have tied Jerry West, Larry Foust and Elgin Baylor for most consecutive finals losses in NBA history, and will most likely surpass that milestone:roll:

You deny Magic forcing his way to L.A to join Kareem, refusing to sign anywhere else?

You deny the 80's West being severely weak?

Division champions. That's regular season.

Russell not only won in the regular season, but he won when it mattered most. You know. That thing called The Finals.
