View Full Version : Star Wars is and should be a vessel for political progress

It's bigger than lasers and shit. Star Wars serves a bigger role than that. JJ Abrahams put this new era of the franchise on the right path.
There has been talks about introducing a homosexuality angle with Poe and Finn. From what I've seen on twitter and among the internet... Most people are for this idea. I concur. Not many big time movie franchises are this bold. But it's 2016. Star Wars, spearheaded by Disney, need to progress to the next level of acceptance and equality. They got off to a great start with a powerful dominant female lead, and introducing racial minorities as focal characters to the plot. These are baby steps, they need to keep progressing to greater heights.
Homosexuality... Gender fluid characters, a transexual...
Star Wars needs to look at the bigger picture here. Film is a form of art that greatly shape the society and culture we live in. It's time we accepted this. It's more than the lasers and jedis and shit. That stuff isn't important. What message it sends to our kids...
That's important.

It's a gat damn space adventure movie noted for fun, epic mythological references and special effects
The millennial social justice warrior feminism twist kills the fun because the agenda is not transparent. I'm all about equality and all that ish. I just don't like it shoved in my face when at the expense of something like say, the star wars saga.
So, in my opinion starwars is episode 1 through 6.
This recent thing was something else entirely, that I did not enjoy and wish I didn't see.

That's what everyone tells me who don't even care about politics. Which makes me to believe they went all out liberal on this shit.
Even people were happy about a black guy in the film when there has already been black dudes in Star Wars. Billy d and James earl jones were in the movie.

Just a little reminder for what the future of SW holds... I believe someone else posted this when it came out;
http://www.buzzfeed.com/davidmack/finnpoe-forever#.wb4NyYrYk
"the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”
Honestly they just need to open the floodgates. These are issues touching on topics way more important than Sci Fi. The Star Wars Universe agrees, so let the equality flow and the good times rolling...

Billy D was the shit. Started off mysterious, than turned face, then turned heel, then turned face again in ESB. Ended up destroying the 2nd death star (which by the way, I thought Lucas coulda/shoulda/woulda maybe thought of a different super weapon but oh well).
Spoiler alert in case you never saw it:
They put a 3rd freaking death star in this new movie which was stupid but the new "black" character that everyone was raving about is going to be the gay lover of the new hot shot pilot the last movie introduced. An absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary storyline for no other purpose than to pander to that b1tch who decided to make the lead character a female that was more powerful in 20 minutes than a 4-years-trained with Obi-wan and Yoda Luke Skywalker. I don't even remember her name, but she produced the movie with JJ. Heard she's the one who's been pushing for this awful twist on the franchise.

I agree with you on that. New Star Wars was a major letdown and the movie has the SAME exact plot as the original Star Wars(New Hope). You're telling me they had a $5billion budget and they came up with that unimaginative plot? Oh look, Kylo Ren is the new Darth Vadar and is his grandson. Oh look, the new and improved r2d2 must be sent to Luke as it has plans to destroy the new death star and the chick must send it to him similar to how Princess Leila put plans on the original r2d2 that must be sent to Obi-Won to destroy the death star. Oh look, the chick is a slave like Anniken and ends up becoming a jedi. Oh look, they have to destroy the death star again after it destroyed a shit ton of planets
Honestly, episodes 1-3 that came out during the 2000's were really underrated. They actually focused on developing the story and explained the political tensions happening.
This new one is honestly the worst of the series.

(in case you guys didn't pick up the sarcasm)
(I hate the new star wars and hope it goes down this path, just so i can watch it burn)
(I agree with knickballer's post 100%)
(Enjoy your shitty franchise dweebs. It's all about social identity politics now. I'm going to laugh my ass off when it turns out Rey's parents are transgender)
(Nothing like a mom is your dad and your dad is your mom plot twist)

hey, star wars was for the nerds
let it be for the gays too
nerds and gays are basically the same thing so you shouldn't hate on them for getting on your star wars

Yea, it seems a bit strange. I don't know why having a female character for Rey is such a big deal when Princess Leila had the biggest role in the series(after Luke) in the originals and that was 30-40 years ago...
But I don't think it matters as the movie will get glaring reviews from all reviewers and praise from Hollywood because two of the main characters will be gay, transgender, pro abortion or w/e the directors casts them to be. The director will be known for his courageous acts and being a warrior for the LGBTQ community :oldlol:

The way i see it... All the quirky equality shit like having a strong powerful female lead and a black co-lead... That in of itself was fine with me. What made it not fine was the fact that it was really the only pieces of originality in the movie. It was literally a reskin, fan made version of a new hope. If it had brought ANYTHING new besides different genders and races for the main characters, I probably wouldn't have minded.
I could go on for awhile why the movie was shit, but that is the main point. It would be a decent movie if the 6 SW films that came before it didn't exist. But unfortunately, they do. And they affect new installments. MASSIVELY.

It's dissapointing that what is supposed to be a fantasy story from a long time ago in a galaxy far away has turned into a constant reminder about modern day politics and social justice issues. At least if you are going to do it, make it subtle and not to the point where it is painfully obvious. I mean cmon, no one argues about whether to hold hands when you are running for your life :facepalm It just kills the atmosphere.

Not to mention all the old heroes - save for Leia, the female, have regressed dramatically. I can only imagine this was done simply because they were white males catching hate from that female social justice warrior producer.
Han Solo's character had leaps and bounds of character development from A New Hope through ESB to ROTJ. He was a cocky cynical smuggler with a chip on his shoulder, then in ESB he falls in love and battles with the conflict of returning to pay old debts or stay with the Rebellion and love interest in Leia, then in ROTJ he becomes a full blown General of the Rebellion who leads the ground team to defeat the 2nd death star.
This guy progressed immensely. Now we're to believe - as a senior citizen no less - that he's REGRESSED into the same cynical cocky smuggler he was in his 20's - abandoned all responsibility, and had an emo son. Meanwhile Leia became another "strong woman" as if Rey wasn't enough girlpower for this reboot.

Yep. This is one of my main gripes. They performed absolute character assassination. None of the old characters made much sense in the new movie. Turned our valiant heroes who saved the galaxy from impending evil... Into cowards. (especially Han and Luke)

Totally demeans and lessens the quality of the 6 movies before it. They defeat the prime evil and save the galaxy from destruction and death... Only for that victory to barely last and now they're somehow the underdogs again... like seriously? What an unimaginative way to reboot the same plot. All the while shitting on the stories and characters that came before it

Luke's storyline can still be changed and there is a lot to be left explained, although my confidence that they will do it well has significantly dropped after watching the last movie. But Han's is basically set in stone and it was extremely disappointing. He was supposed to be the mentor for the younger characters but half the time he was being shown up on operating his own fricking ship.

^ the source of the problem is this lady. At first I thought it was Abrams but then I realized he's just a weak man white knighting a feminists demands.
She's making these movies HER way. With lots of strong women and minorities, and only a few white heterosexual males that are made to be very weak - even if they were old heroes of the galaxy they've now become weak.

The feminist and her pawn:
http://i.newsarama.com/images/i/000/146/284/i02/SW_TFA_Panel.jpg
Gotta say, feminism took a huge W on this one (at the expense of Star Wars). Normally they are seen blogging or screaming through megaphones on the streets their victim babble. This lady low-key inserted her agenda into one of the most famous and beloved pieces of entertainment in history and did so from the shadows quietly enough that no one saw it coming.
She Palpatined us. She is the real Phantom Menace.

Not to mention an offensive lack of gender fluidity. Luke has got to become a woman in the 2nd or final act or else an entire beautiful way of being will be unrepresented in Star Wars. In this post Jenner era you absolutely can not ignore gender fluidity.

One thing I see all the time on this site - not necessarily from the people whove been posting in this thread already, but a lot of posters and people just in society in general - is they'll say something like this about a movie franchise or some kind of entertainment:
I cant believe they did x, y, and z, and what were they thinkin adding this element, and the new such and such is so retarded, and the director has absolutely disgraced it, and the next one is just going to be even worse, and the whole thing is ruined...
Of course, Im still gonna see it.
Hopefully yall arent those types. Most of society is. Take whatever shit medicine is shoved down their throat, and comlplain about it but not have the guts to actually refuse it if your friends are doing it or because you simply have nothin better to do.
If they know theyve got your money in the bag of course theyre not gonna give a shit about what kind of product they give you or if youll like it. So much bullshit in this country (including far more important issues) relies on peoples complete unwillingness to find alternatives, even for things theyre unhappy with.
Huge pet peeve of mine, but thats just me.
