For Nixon he posed as a socialist and made campaign contributions to a Nixon rival and then send copies of his checks to the same NH newspaper as the Muskie letter.

If you're a political person and haven't seen All the President's Men or read the book, I highly recommend both.

Somebody mentioned Watergate today at work and a foreign cowoker hadn't heard of Watergate. So I went to youtube looking for good summary and I found out the BBC did a multihour documentary back in 1994. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watergate_(documentary_series))

It's really good, because they convinced the actual folks involved to talk on camera. So instead of the reporters talking about the break in and cover up, you see the actual burglars talking about the break in and Nixon's top aides talking about the coverup.

Watching the first episode, forgot how much of a nut G. Gordon Liddy is and how much his bullheadness intimidated the other folks into taking bigger risks. He also the day after the burgularly offered to John Dean a way to contain the damage. He said he would be willing to go stand on a certain street corner in Washington and wait to be killed by whomever Dean would give the job too. That way the admistration would be safe.
