I'm no athlete or pro at this kind of thing but to my untrained eye, his problem is landing full force on his heels and that way all the strain of the landing is absorbed directly by the joints in his ankles and knees, which can't ideal tbh. Has to try to land smoothly by kind of using his feet, legs and hips as sort of a cushion. Like springs, not stilts.
