I always hear how every industry is ultra-competitive, everything is hard to get into, or the jobs are few and far between from literally everyone. How accurate is this statement?

During the two World Wars when a good chunk of the working population was either overseas fighting or had already died doing that. And the Gov't had ramped up it's industrial needs.

I know if you kicked out a large percentage of illegals, there would be a large amount of jobs available and businesses would be forced to either automate or pay much higher labor wages.

During WWII domestic unemployment was super low since so many people were in the army.

Mid-50ths and late 60's were pretty low. Recently the late 1990's were a boom time.

As was pointed out already, the 50s and 60s was basically the USA's golden age of prosperity. A simple blue-collar worker could buy a house, car, and support a wife and two kids off a single family income.
