View Full Version : New policy requiring 20 hours of work or volunteering to qualify for food stamps.
Facebook poll on Fox News say 95% of people voted in favor of the idea out of ~51,000 votes.
The new policy goes into effect in Mississippi, which has the second highest percentage of food stamps recipients in the country.
What does ISH think?
Me personally, I like the idea, as long as you can be medically exempt and if you do have children, they are able to stay with a spouse or immediate family member.

Ive never understood why this hasnt been in place all along.
I dont oppose social assistance for those who NEED it and are TRYING to get by.
But when you just hand it out with no requirements, of course its gonna get absolutely abused to hell, which it always has been. I dont even blame the people who take it, I blame the policy for being easily defrauded.
If youre in between jobs and need to use the safety net, fine. But do SOMETHING productive, cant just sit at home smoking weed all day and collect.

Yep. No more(less at least) Obama free rides. Back to the old Clinton/Gingrich era entitlement requirements.
But what about those 6 million, grossly obese starving children that go to bed hungry every night? :confusedshrug:

I'm okay with that if there is some program in place to subsidize daycare for underage kids and places for other young kids to go too. No point in making these mandatory rules if there isn't something like this since the majority of these women are single parents. Needs to also be greater emphasis and resources going after the dead beat dads, which help facilitate these women being on welfare and other assistance.

I know on a site like this you think it makes you cool to post like that, but how about we keep things grounded in reality. Regardless of the reason for these women having kids in order to have a chance to break the cycle certain realities need to be acknowledged and what I talked about is among them. Now you can beat your chest and call them names, but how does that resolve this issue?

I doubt crimes will go up, but I think there will be a lot of women who will fail the requirements, if there aren't things like vouchers for daycare and rides to work aren't built into it. I think alongside volunteering and working certain jobs there can be mandatory training in a host of job types needed for the areas in which these people live in financed by the county, state and feds. I am also okay with restricting what can be bought with the money loaded onto welfare cards.
In the end there needs to be greater incentive to get people to get off welfare. Right now it is more throwing money at the issue and hoping it dies down long enough for whoever is in office to make it to the next level in government or make enough connections to go into the private sector and make bank.

You don't need to go anywhere to volunteer. Walk outside and start picking up trash.
Let your local county office you are going to do it for your 20 hours a week, and I'm sure they'll be just fine with it.

Nah, these people need structure and rules in the beginning. In many cases it seems to me akin to a lot of the people who first join the military. You need to be broken down to a degree and built back up to gain the belief in yourself and then you can break the cycle. Track people, make them check in at places, go places, get training and we can begin to chip at the issue affecting the inner city and rural communities.

I dont think it's the worst idea and atleast it's a start to fix the issue.
If people need food stamps they should provide some service to society assuming they are physically able to work. In addition it would weed out those that really need food stamps to survive and those that are scamming the system by working cash paying jobs and getting benefits on the side.
But before we start taking welfare away from poor citizens and I assume many do need the benefits we need to address corporate welfare first.

What if people refuse to do work ? They show up but sit down all day. You would need to set a system in place to hold people accountable.
But other than that I do agree. Some people could use a sense of purpose in their lives.

I agree but before we start targeting low income families we can start by reducing defense spending and then limiting corporate welfare amongst other areas.
Once the government starts addressing these other areas they would have an easier time limiting social programs.
But in reality politicians won't do anything because we are too dependent on government money and there are too many votes to be lost by slashing programs and it's easier to promise free shit we can't afford.

Having to work/volunteer =/= no way to get food stamps.
The ones who are exempt for whatever reason will still get theirs. Everyone who is able will need to work to earn theirs.
Saying 'we have to give people food stamps or they'll rob us' isn't justification for why you have to give food stamps to people who aren't willing to work for it.
Plus, the work/volunteer time not only teaches life skills, it teaches job skills as well.
And as an FYI, this proponent of this program is also a proponent of second amendment rights, so if someone feels the desire to rob me, good luck.

I don't care either way, but I bet you this policy will actually cost the state more money, since you will need to staff people will need to verify that 20 hours has been worked/volunteered. You will need to make transportation/child care available to some people so that they can. Then you need to worry about jobs for the physically/mentally handicapped. Sounds like a logistics nightmare for the state.

It's amazing how quickly these issues balloon in first-world societies that tolerate them as reasons not to work.
Try living in a village threatened by famine and telling them you don't feel like doing your daily chores because you have acne.
Try being an immigrant somewhere who isn't eligible for support and has kids to provide for. Amazing how the excuses disappear.

Even if we assume the majority of the people want to work why would some of them work when they can get just as much money in benefits by either not working at all or working reduced hours. There are even schemes where low-income families do not get legally married because it could effect the amount of social welfare they get.
I don't blame anyone for taking advantage of any loopholes. If a government program existed where there was an incentive for me not to work and I could still make the same amount of money I probably would take advantage of it.
I don't believe in demonization of the poor the right partakes in but I don't believe the government should incentivize families to be on social welfare programs. There are multi-generation families that have been on welfare and welfare should be a temporary safety net not a way of living.
But in the end taking away benefits is not a politically popular choice and politicians would rather promise things then take them away.

The way I see it is that welfare is generally for people that have made bad decisions in their life. Decisions that aren't necessarily irreversible but extremely hard. Welfare is used as a stipend, and before you know it, your stuck. I don't think people are on welfare because they simply don't want to work. Hell most of the people I know that use welfare, do work. When are you going to get drunk again and make an embarrassing and cringeworthy video for us to laugh AT? You're one of those losers that thinks people are laughing with you...no bro...were laughing at you because you are so pathetic.

But you don't work and you live with your Mom.
And I wasn't drunk.
You, though, are an admitted alcoholic that has severed all your relationships and potential.
People want to work bro. Please stop it.
If they want to work, they should have no issue volunteering their time.
Or.... do they not want to work?

I actually make a fine living and have my own place because I actually went to college and got a degree and didn't drop out of 9th grade because of my acne. (boo hoo) You are the one stuck on welfare who needed a 300 lb whale to get with you to get laid. Now you got two mongoloid kids who are destined for the same...because what could they possibly learn from being raised by two hippos like you and your gf? Wait...she's destined to eventually dump you and take those kids away...I suppose you'll go back to making out with and sucking off dudes then.

If people on food stamps could work and not have them, they'd do it.
That is just factually incorrect. People get food stamps because they can. I had a woman at work turn down a new position making more money because she would lose more in food stamps than gain with the raise. Ive known multiple people on food stamps just because. Maybe file it emergency and claim to be homeless. Get them quick with no review and just have to go do the meeting later. Free food for 6 months or so. There are still stores near here you can buy liquor with food stamps indirectly. You just buy an equal value in food and swap it out....
I know people selling weed out their moms house on food stamps. They have money....live with their parents...have food stamps just because. They use that shit to have cookouts.
Food stamps are among the most abused programs in history. Probably the very most.
Way way waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more people have them than need them. I came up as poor as ill accept any American here ever was....my mom wouldnt get food stamps on general principle. Ive had to feed a family on 4 bucks. Its not costly to make a big pot of dirty rice(rice, sausage, an old onion, and a can of whatever will do it).
Food stamps for the most part let people eat better(Or worse depending on how you look at it). But a huge number of people with them dont need them at all. I know a 300 pound aspiring rapper on food stamps and living with his mom(who has a good job) right now.
Pretty much every able bodied/mentally competent adult in America can eat enough to get by without food stamps. Its the extras that they couldnt pull off.
Half the people you talking about turning to crime would still have cell phones.
Being a poor American isnt like being poor in parts of the world where shit gets real.
You could take every penny and possession I have and make me start from scratch....id be in a new job with a rebuilt life in 3 months. Im driven to do what needs doing.
Sad to say...huge number of poor people dont have the drive to do shit about it.
Dont know how many unemployed friends of friends ive offered to get a job for....lot of broke people get in a comfort zone and see they get continue to get by without working. So why bother?
If not for the children going hungry....this would serve the greater good. As it is?
Fine. Buy the dope boys babyback ribs and let hoes flip food stamps for shoe money because they have 7 kids they can spread over their sister and mom to total 2000 a month in stamps to go with 1000 dollar section 8 vouchers...
If the kids eat im cool with it.
But dont tell me people get food stamps because they have to have them.
Most people never find out how far need is from want.

I myself was very fortunate to grow up with means, however due to my own wanderings and pursuits I have spent a good deal of my adult life around lower income classes. People who are struggling but doing things the right way usually don't end up struggling for long, or at the very least ensure their kids won't struggle. That's not to say they're having a grand ol' time, but they're usually able to get to a place where they can make their way without assistance. But the simple reality is, a lot of the poor simply don't value the same things the middle and upper classes value, and their lifestyle is a result of this.
Even in high school, where kids come mostly from the same areas, you have some who work their butts off, some who do enough to get by, and some who slack, cause trouble, and don't make any effort. That's just the natural variety of humans. There are plenty of people in this country willing to milk scams and programs while living their base, uninspired lives. TONS of people like that. It's all over the place.
The denial about this is simply for the sake of fitting a narrative. "The rich have too much." It's mostly envious middle class people who play this card, not becuase they want to lift the poor up, but because they want to reign the rich IN, so that they themselves move up a little bit close to the top. But they guise it in a phony, self-righteous concern for all those 'innocent people who just can't catch a break no matter how hard they try'
It's great to want to help the poor. But the only ones you can really help OUT of poverty are the ones who want to help themselves, which is not an overwhelming percentage. For everyone else, giving them money is simply giving them complacence. Democrats are either too dumb to realize this or too nefarious to acknowledge it.

If you stopped reading dont tell me I dont know what im talking about.
There are millions of people on food stamps who dont need them. 100% of the people I know on them dont need them.....which includes many of my own family.
You dont get to decide what reality is. We know these people. They may be examples from my life...but 100% of people who came up poor like me grew up seeing the same examples. I saw the same in chicago...north carolina....DC...south carolina.
I used to buy food stamps from people when I got my first place. Im giving women 50 bucks for 100 in food and driving them to the liquor store with the money. There are literally....millions of these people. And your opinion on that fact doesnt change it.
People get food stamps because they can. There are 50 million people on them probably feeding twice that number. I strongly suspect 100 million people wouldnt starve to death or start sucking dick in the park for turkey dogs if they went away.
It is a crutch and it is being abused to a crazy extent.
As I said....im fine with it for the most part because a lot of kids are eating....and im not gonna say take food out of their mouths because their parents are putting it there in shady ways. Feed your kids any way you can. But lets be real about it.
There are tens of millions of people who just dont need it. They want it. With all the help America gives the poor and lazy you almost never reach the point of needing anything if you dont have serious mental or physical problems.

there will be a liberal uproar about this, pretending like we're treating them as slaves to live :coleman:
there really needs to be some penalties placed on people who put themselves in bad situations. whether thats being broke and having babby after baby or people who are able but dont want to work. that shit is so regular in this country and they abuse the handout systems.
