View Full Version : Joe Lacob: Warriors Light-Years Ahead Of Every Other Team In Structure, Planning

“We’ve crushed them on the basketball court, and we’re going to for years because of the way we’ve built this team,” he said. But what really set the franchise apart, he said, was the way it operated as a business. “We’re light-years ahead of probably every other team in structure, in planning, in how we’re going to go about things,” he said. “We’re going to be a handful for the rest of the NBA to deal with for a long time.”

The thing that makes them light years ahead is player personnel.

The thing that makes them light years ahead is Steph Curry.

Lacob himself admitted that they tried to trade Curry to the Bucks for Bogut rather than Ellis.

Light years ahead?

No. That's just fortune smiling upon you.

No. That's just fortune smiling upon you.I agree. Having the best player in the league on the best bargain contract can make an organization look a lot smarter than they actually are. No David Lee -> no Draymond in starting lineup, either. Kerr himself said he was only planning to give Draymond 12mpg last season.

They have a competent and capable front office (have drafted/traded/signed well) and the coaching staff is top 5. But they're not light-year ahead.

Cocky as hell. Light years ahead of the Spurs organization? Will feel good to bounce these losers from the play offs this year if they even make it to the WCF.

Very Silicon Valley attitude. Spurs have been doing this years, how about you keep this up for multiple titles before you start running off at the mouth

Jerry West + Pop mentored coach = win.

I am very happy that Atlanta, Celtics, Spurs, Warriors, to some degree Utah are showing the way to compete in the league.

Build slow, focus on smart players with easygoing personalities and no huge egos.

Play an equal opportunity system, taking advantage of the modern rules.

You really have to wonder about the competence of the GMs and owners around the league.

GSW is for offense in this modern era what Thibs was for defense.

Actually, the GSW is clearly based on a Spurs philosophy, but more exploititavely. GSW are more exposed to risk if rules change than Spurs.

What's going to happen when Curry wants a max contract? Will there be room to pay everyone what they want?

Yeah, he needs to relax lol.. Dude also wanted to trade Klay for Love, until Kerr turned it down.

It should be noted that after Flip died Windhorst didn't need to protect his source any longer and reported that they agreed to the trade; only it was after the Cavs and Wolves already had an agreement in place.

So Lacob literally tried to trade BOTH Steph and Klay, lucked into Dray midway through the 2nd round, and has the audacity to say how brilliant he and his team are.

And sounds like Trump in his braggadocios tone.

I ripped Mark Jackson on his way out, but I'm starting to understand that maybe the fault wasn't so one sided.

Nah. He's not really silicon valley. He's a venture capitalist from the east coast, educated on the west coast and grew up a Celtics fan. He's just an elitist who couldn't wait to brag. The other owner, Gruber is a Hollywood producer. Go figure. Anyway, beats the last owner hands down. That guy didn't have a clue.

It's also easy to talk shit like this when you a potential top 5 player. When you GOAT-level organizations like the Spurs and they never talk like this, it's best to just keep quiet. You're never going to be the only one innovating and pushing forward, nonsense like this makes you sound obnoxious instead of confident. Without having a once in a lifetime player like Curry, this kind of comment would get him laughed at by the NBA.

Jerry West threatened to leave the organization if that happened.
Yeah, West was the other one. I knew two of them wanted to make that retarded deal, while Kerr and West were completely against it.

Didn't this guy want to trade Curry years ago? Prob shouldn't get cocky when all it takes is a injury to have everything crashing down.

It's better to be lucky than good. Imagine if the Spurs got the second pick in the 97 draft. Or the Blazers picked Jordan at 2 in 84. Or if Kobe was a bust after the Lakers picked him 13. Or if the Celtics who traded up to the second pick in the 56 draft were denied Russell because the Royals picked him first instead of picking Sihugo Green?

Having a great infrastructure is part of the battle, but drafting matters the most. Would people be lauding the Warriors if David Kahn drafted Curry instead of Johnny Flynn? Would Pop be a top 5 coach of all time if he didn't have the chance to draft Duncan? I highly doubt it.

Lacob seems like one of those guys prone to getting a big head and getting carried away with stuff, buying into his own hype. Golden State has done a tremendous job in putting together a great roster and a very good front office but lets pump the brakes on the "light years ahead" stuff.

Or if the Warriors had gone through with the Curry for Stoudemire trade that they reached with Kerr and the Suns prior to the draft.
