No such thing as GOAT era

70's are probably the most physical, tough and lockdown though

Complete opposite of the free flowing 80's and most of the 90's

You are right about the 70s in general was big time big man and defensive physical style of play. Late 70s and early 80s was a bit free flowing but as the years passed in the 80s there 2 styles developed: the west; free flowing fast paced and break style of game and the east; ground and pound half court and slower pace oriented teams. Early 90s was similar to the 80s too.

League wide offense became easier as team defenses become restricted due to the 1979 handchecking ban, and the 1981 Illegal Defense rules, which were instituted on the purpose to open up the court, increase scoring and ease for star players. It succeeded, in turning the physical jump shot league 70's into a free flowing offensive show.

Guys like Charles Barkley got it easy. Weak team defenses... Great times for star players.

Seems like most decades have been emphasizing offense and defense alternately: 60's were mostly offensive (although the defensive Celtics dominated), 70's turned defensive (except for the ABA), 80's were fast paced again, although Eastern dominant teams depended a lot on their defense, most of the 90's turned the pace down, 2000's gave a bit more emphasis on offense. 2010's seems to be pretty balanced as of today.

Split between 90s and 00's. I can recollect the 00's more. The new era (2011 and beyond aka current era) is weak as ****.

We'll be back before decade's end. Too many greats were declining, about to decline or declined before 10, right after 10.

Shaq, Nash, Kobe, Duncan, KG, Dirk etc etc etc...

Much prefer the early 2000s, mid 90s than tail end 00's

Funny you should say this, because people were saying the exact same thing when all of those guys started their careers. The game was always better in the past, the game is always the worst in the present, and the game is going to get worse in the future.

Crazy right!

Not crazy no. Not really the fault of fans that the league has Betas like Lebron, colluders like Wade and Bosh, sissies like Dwight, and softies like KD leading the league.

For Me Its 80s and early 90s.

I've seen the late 60's through todays NBA.

Every decade had their share of great players.

Ironically as an offensive game , I liked the defensive era of the 80's- 90's.
These were IMO the guys that played on both ends of the court , because if there was a weakness, the offense would exploit the shit out of it.
Today's bball all most has no defense, and barely reaches 90-100 points a game for a win.

Posted this earlier: (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showpost.php?p=12177219&postcount=30)

The modern era began in 1979-80, but there's a better way to divide eras than this old, tired, and expired "classic/modern" dichotomy:

Golden age: 1980s
The Golden Age moniker fits due to the number of powerful dynasites in the Showtime Lakers, the Bird Celtics, Dr. J's Sixers, and the Bad Boys of Mowtown. The league was much more top-heavy, tho the style dramatically altered from the coke-fueled 70s with the perfect marriage of athletes and team play.

Silver age: 1990s
Instead of dynasties, we have one dominant team steamrolling the league, 6 titles in 8 years, with an interregneum of the Houston Rockets in 1994 and 1995. The lack of legitimate dynasties as well as dilution due to expansion and sluggish pace knock this era down a few pegs.

Bronze age: 2000s
Since Jordan was so dominant in the previous era, the league sought would-be replacements in Shaq, Duncan, Kobe, Iverson, but none of them were capable of filling those Nikes. Although the competition improved, teams did not shake off the doldrums of the slow-ball style of the 90s until Steve Nash's Phoenix Suns of 2005 introduced small ball.

Contemporary age: 2010s till now
LBJ won 4 MVPs in 5 years, and the league successfully transitioned to Small Ball with the Miami Heat (4 finals in a row) and the Golden State Warriors, now threatening to win 70 plus games. In fact, I suspect the Warriors are not just a dominant team, they're actually a team from the future, say 5 years down the road, suddenly thrust upon the present, forcing the league to accelerate the small ball evolution ahead of schedule. :hammerhead:

Early-mid 2000s. Great defensive era with Duncan, Kobe, Shaq, Garnett, Dirk, Nash, Kidd, T-Mac etc etc all in their primes.

This era is being slept on though. Never before has strict defensive principles and team-oriented offense been more present. A Bucks-Timberwolves game is legitimately enjoyable to watch. Watching games between non Playoff teams from the 80s and early 90s is torture (it's essentially ISO offense from the second and third tier stars with no defense until the last few minutes).

Early 1980's to early 1990's.

76ers, Celtics, Bulls, Lakers and Pistons were all GOAT tier teams competing for titles. And also maybe the GOAT era ever for sheer GOAT level superstars.

That's expected. A lot of people in here are young so they go by what they saw.
