View Full Version : Taxi Driver is overrated

To follow up on my Casino thread - here's another movie that's considered a classic that I just dont get why. Nothing much happens in the first 80% of it, there is little plot development to speak of, Travis Bickle isn't that interesting (nor are the other characters), and ultimately its just boring.
The bloodbath at the end seems to indicate that vigilantism is justifiable and cool. OK.
I guess when it came out in 1976 its appeal was its shock value. All the sheltered Howdy Doody suburbanites who had fled the cities in the 50's and 60's were probably shocked to see the rough shape that NYC was in with crime and grit, and that characters like Bickle actually existed. But by today's standards, it doesn't hold up.
This movie sucks!

Taxi Driver will always hold up. If anything, the ideas it presents were a little ahead of their time. It represents certain aspects of society even moreso now than when it was released.
All time classic.

You're quite wrong.
Best film on loneliness, alienation and the inability to connect with people ever made.
The acting is fantastic. It's a character study more than a plot driven action movie.
One of the characters in the study is the underside of 1970's NYC.

Never seen it
Don't waste your time. If you want to get a feel for the movie, step outside and watch a taxi driver taking a smoke break - that's essentially 75% of the film.

I think it is overrated, but DeNiro's performance is not and the movie is still very good.

so is raging bull, so is humphrey bogart, so is a lot of shit film geeks hype up before their time that most people today would find overrated as fukk :sleeping
the average person can never trust a film nerd. they're the worst at recommending entertaining movies. its like going off the academy what is good and bad, worst opinions in any medium ever other than mebbe boxing stans :facepalm

The conclusion was also silly. Bickle achieves redemption and "saves the world" by killing one pimp and a couple of bums in a city with 100,000 scumbags in it. All to save a hooker that didn't want to be saved.
C'mon. I just dont get the appeal. Macho fantasy I guess.

Not a Scorsese fan, either, but the big problem of today's movie goers is that they trained to 2 hours nonstop action. A film that doesn't move at lightspeed is seen as boring and bland. People call that crap that is the "new" Mad Max movie one of the best of all times. It has exactly one predictable plot twist, the characters don't evolve. It's just hours of chasing and nothing else.
Those same people will call movies that visually don't move along but try to develop characters junk.

Or perhaps that doesn't happen at all.

old classics have little to any staying power , because yester-year classics were based on 50-60 movies that was about edi'cate.
Most old movies were simple with at the time a powerful message or story line.
To this day , I will take a western movie over anything put out today.
They always had a villain , story line and a hero.
Gun fire was not bloody and it was based on values.
The movie I saw today 1965 Bounty Killer was a great movie , for some it would be considered boring.

80's+ mafia movies >>> everything else...
old classic movies are classy and gentlemanly romantic but overall boring :sleeping
most westerns have sucked IMO after the old clint eastwoods. the tv series like Bonanza, big valley, etc. were better than new gen westerns crap like Pale Rider and whatever else i can't remember.
2000+ the real shit are TV series. movies suck compared to the TV series of today. movies are mostly hyped up overrated crap these days. so many average movies get high ratings it just goes to show how pitiful the competition generally is. the movie industry is a sham :coleman:

I love character study films.
There Will be Blood was great.
On the Waterfront, Sunset Boulevard, and Citizen Kane (to state 3 older films) were great.
Taxi Driver was shiit, for the reason I stated, amongst others.

The ending is woefully ironic.
Travis is hailed as a hero simply because he couldn't go through with his attempt to assassinate the presidential candidate and chose to shoot some pimps instead. It's a critique of American society -- as the whole film is.
I don't know why you say nothing happens though. I don't think that's a valid criticism in a character study. The idea is that you simply watch the character exist and draw your ideas from there. Nothing really happens in There Will be Blood either, but like you said it's a great film.

I really enjoyed Tombstone and Young Guns. True Grit was hailed and I liked the actors in it for their past movies, but I thought it was junk.
