What exactly is "upstate New York"? The entire state other than NYC? :confusedshrug:

Pretty much everything other than NYC and Long Island but people don't really consider the lower portion (Westchester, White Plains) to be part of it. It more or less refers to majority of the state that is more rural as opposed to the urban and suburban areas of NYC and Long Island.

About like this. Long Island is the biggest part of New York that is not upstate or the city

Downstate New York is a term denoting the southeastern portion of New York State, United States, in contrast to Upstate New York. The term "Downstate New York" has less currency than its counterpart term "Upstate New York". The Downstate region, like Upstate New York, is divided into several subregions—New York City, Long Island, and the northern suburbs of New York City (usually consisting of Westchester County, Putnam County and Rockland County). The northern boundary is extended by some definitions to include all or some of Orange County, and Dutchess County.

Queens and Brooklyn are physically on same island as Long Island. The only part of NYC that is part of the mainland is The Bronx.

Met a lot of upstate dudes in college. They tend to be more rural than those who grow up in the NYC/LI/Westchester area. As others have posted, technically Brooklyn/Queens are on Long Island.

They tend to be more laid back and cool. Some rundown poor cities up there (Buffalo has some rough neighborhoods from what I've heard from those who grew up there). A lot of state universities up there are popular to go to because some of them are solid and well recognized in the whole state and they tend to have better party scenes then some schools in the NYC area.

More down to earth people upstate. Really fun to go upstate like Lake George during the summer. Great getaway destination for NYCers.

Personally, parts of Northern Jersey are more desirable to live in than upstate NY IMO.
