View Full Version : Why are so many black people allergic to possessive nouns?

Do y'all notice this online as much as I do?
Lots of times when I see tweets, Youtube comments, Instagram/ Facebook posts, article comments, etc. I can't help but observe the extremely frequent trend of black posters flat out failing or refusing to add possession to the noun they are describing.
For example:
her man mixtape, instead of man's
his mom car, instead of mom's
This isn't intended to be a race baiting thread but I am just wondering if this annoys people as much as it does me? Just one of those little things that makes me loathe internet interaction. Especially as it seems to breed new retarded patterns of communication and this is just one example of MANY
The funny thing is, while I can attribute some of these people to just simply being undereducated and having poor grammar and grasp of the English language, many people I've seen do this I KNOW know better.
Lots and lots of educated black people do this as well. I'm wondering, is this another case of many black people feeling motivation to show a monolithic way of behavior? It seems that way to me in this case.
If you are intelligent enough to grasp college level material and still leave out apostrophes and the letter 's' it's almost like a desire to be accepted as a bona fide member of the black community.
I can't be the only one who notices this reoccurring theme as it pertains to nouns and possession within black internet users. Only a handful are dumb enough to truly know no better.
Real n!ggas, tell me, what is so corny about ' and s ??

It's not worse than 'axed'.
African languages are very simple, lacking many concepts of nuance. Other language groups are the same such as Thai, Burmese.
Maybe it is genetic.

So there's not just a sociological factor but also biological.
This issue has long perplexed me to believe it was just a simple cultural phenomenon.

This is a sensitive subject for black people... I think they're tired of being targeted and embarrassed about shit. They're angry from slavery and not quite successful as a 'race' of people. The stats don't really lie. But that's not my place. It is what it is. They are what they are.

I was an "axe" user until I joined Forensics in high school and this black lady from another school talked with me for about 15 min. after my extemporaneous speech about properly pronouncing words. Some of the best advice I ever had in HS.
A lot of black people are just used to saying things a certain way. Like I hate older folks who say "chirrin" instead of children.

Well yes, I have a dirty mouth, even online. I type ebonics myself but I will always give credit to the possessive property of a noun when applicable.
Read a bunch of sentences without possessive nouns and tell me it doesn't come off as caveman speak when it is an active decision instead of just unadulterated ignorace. The heavy majority of these people were taught in elementary about adding ' and s.

Deuces showing what an ideological fanatic he is, while bragging how "smart" he is, and how much "scientific research" he's waded through while examining speech patterns and proving definitively that they are wholly dependent on wealth, just like everything else in that silly and oversimplified world of his.
No room for individuality in Deuces' world, no personal decisions, nor any bother to recognise that many speech mannerisms are simply affectations, and thus have more to do with peer pressure than they do wealth. Everything in human existence is explained by one simple thing in his eyes: how much money there is. What a dumbass; what an ideologue; what a proof that he's one of the "terrible simplifiers" that have formed the basis of all ideologically fanatical movements throughout history.
The ironic thing is that this idiot thinks he's a man of science, while spewing his highly conjectural opinions as if they were absolute and repeatedly proven scientific fact. Hey Deuces, specialising in Botany doesn't make you an authority on anything else, and doesn't make your opinion on human relations any more scientific than anyone else's. In most cases, your snap conclusions, and your childish reductionisms, make your opinions rather anti-scientific, and the opposite of empirical. This is a really common thing with mediocre scientists: they think because they've reached a rather modest position in their own filed (and in Deuces case this is a small and largely irrelevant field), that they now know about everything, and that all their opinions magically become "scientific." Genuinely impressive scientists despise this type of person (i've heard many complaints), and consider them a disrepute to the name of science, which is fundamentally about scepticism, not certainty.

Plenty of room for individualism, but there is a wealth of knowledge that counteracts most of your misinformed sociological positions. Now you're just lying, ignoring the points that were made, and moderating your position after already having said:
He's specifically talking about improper use of possessive pronouns, which is ubiquitous across poor people of any race.
Now 'ubiquitous' becomes 'more likely' and your point isn't as idiotic, but that's not what you said, so stop pretending it is.
Is this deliberate obfuscation, or did you just not know what ubiquitous means?
And yeah, i grew up in London, knew people from the shittiest areas, and also people who went to expensive private schools, where there were plenty of kids speaking god-awful english, usually in an attempt to sound cool, because being an illiterate who disdains proper speech is seen as cool to the young; it's likely more of a young and dumb thing than anything else tbh. Most people grow out of speaking like that, and the fact that this does change, actually shows that your point about it being primarily a matter of wealth is false.
Guy talking about meltdowns and shit constantly now--when did you become Dubeta? :facepalm
I think you're spending too much time on the internet dude; I hope you don't speak like that in real life--another indication that people speak differently depending on who they associate with; Christ, when I was in Tunisia for months , I started speaking in broken english, as that's all I heard, saying things like "we go?" and came back sounding like a foreigner. Anyone can make a conscious effort to speak properly, many simply don't.

A missed comma (which are often subjective)? No biggie.

I agree with ROC
I can leave out periods and you still know what I'm saying without any difficulty
There are other things I could do. for example improper capitalization and not using commas
But when someone says "I borrowed my boy car and went to bob dad crab shack before watching Lebron jumper at the Cav arena" it sounds considerably more stupid than leaving out a comma, or failing to use a period.

Missed commas are not subjective. I, can't, just, throw, commas, around, where, ever, I, want.
Same. Goes. With. Periods.
Yes, they can often be, depending on the sentence or idea conveyed.
Commas obviously have guidelines but omitting one or adding one in a particular place can often be at the discretion of the writer or editor and it isn't incorrect.
Many times having or not having a comma is debatable whereas typing, 'her n!gga house always dirty' is incorrect every single time and also reads about 50 times worse than misusing a comma :oldlol: .
I don't expect people to have perfect grammar and punctuation, everybody makes errors, especially online but this thread is only about one type of conscious, active mistake fueled by cultural expectations and peer pressure.
It was an overwhelming observation as it pertains to a simple English rule and the race/culture that actively disassociates with the remedial function of typing thoughts.
That was the point, not typing like an Oxford English scholar everywhere on the net :oldlol:
Posters gave this thread incredible scope whereas I was just voicing my displeasure of seeing black people always leave out possessive pronouns on purpose :hammerhead:

Maybe because black people actually get that nothing in this world is legitimately under the possession of another.
There is only One Owner.

Real talk :applause:
Thanks for weighing in on Deuce's utter failure to live in the operating world

I'm glad to know I am not the only man to notice this pattern, not as a condemnation of educational privilege but as a racial/cultural constraint that truly reveals the societal peer pressures within contemporary black peoples.
