http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-192430/US-Saudi-travel-warning.html

America issued its own warning on travel to Saudi Arabia today, following up on British Airways' decision to ground its services to the Gulf state.

The US state department updated its travel warning to alert Americans to "increased security concerns in Saudi Arabia".

BA announced yesterday that it had temporarily scrapped its four services a week to Jeddah and Riyadh after holding talks with the Department for Transport.

The state department warned all Americans to postpone non-essential travel, due to the "potential for further terrorist actions".

The warning added: "The US Government has received indications of terrorist threats aimed at American and Western interests, including the targeting of transportation and civil aviation.

"There is credible information that terrorists have targeted Western aviation interests in Saudi Arabia."

Prince Turki Al Faisal, Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Britain, issued a statement yesterday which said the threat was specifically to UK aviation interests.

Saudi Airlines has offered to take any BA passengers from or to the kingdom.

The suspension of flights follows the disruption of BA services to Kenya earlier this year - also over terrorism fears.

BA had to cease flights to the capital, Nairobi, on May 15 after the Government ordered a ban on all UK airline flights to and from Kenya.
The suspension was later lifted.

Earlier this year, BA suspended a number of Middle East flights because of the Iraqi war.

There are about 30,000 Britons in Saudi Arabia at any one time - most of them residents who are working there.

The Foreign Office said today that it did not intend to change its advice about travel to the country.

British nationals are advised against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia, but if they do travel they should remain highly vigilant.

UK and the US have issued travel warnings.

Tension is building.

It should by now be obvious to everyone that Saudi Arabia is the black sheep of the international community.

Imports the most weapons
Exports the most oil (and the associated environmental destruction)
Exports totalitarianism and terrorism on an industrial scale
Played a major role in the economic crisis of the 1970s (which helped bring about the triumph of neoliberalism) and 9/11

Brings nothing positive to the world in return (unlike the US, which brings a ton of chaos and destruction but at least is also a positive, creative force in science, technology and enterprise)

I understand we needed oil and they were the ones to supply it to us, but now that we need to get rid of our oil addiction anyway, can't we just ditch them once and for all? Seems like the perfect opportunity for a divorce, hopefully not too messy.

A world in which Saudi Arabia is an irrelevant desert backwater everyone can safely ignore would be a much better place. It's high time we realized they're not just an embarrassing ally because of the way they run their own affairs (although a totalitarian theocracy where beheadings are routine and slavery is basically legal probably isn't the best company to keep to begin with)... their parasitic actions affect everyone else too.

Don't believe in global warming? Then here's another reason for getting off oil: emancipation from these gangsters and their shenanigans. And who knows? Without the energy blackmail card, the Middle East more generally might have to start focusing on legitimate trade and productive activities instead of relying on oil and blood as a business model. You might begin to see broad based prosperity in the region again (they used to be pretty good at legit commerce), along with a reduction in violence and fanaticism.

Glad everyone's coming around to something it was pretty safe to assume on 9/12.

bin Laden had money but he never had al-Saud money. There are thousands of members of that clan of despots who have billions to throw around and a lot of them fund terrorism. It was only a matter of time before some of the money was traced back to some of them.

Come on, it's long been known that the Saudis are the biggest funders of the Wahhabist islamic ideology that has been the foundation of Sunni muslim extremism for decades. The Saudis are directly responsible for the mushrooming of Islamic terrorism over the past few decades, as they have funded and enabled it, all over the world. Meanwhile, we go after irrelevant dictators like Saddam or Assad, who are blown up to Hitler-like proportions of evil, either because the people running shit are incredibly stupid, or trying to distract the masses from the real culprits, or a combination of both (i.e. childish idealists and sociopathic cynics combining to f*ck up the world).

The irony here is that the US has been portraying Iran as this big evil threat to the world ever since its revolution, at the same time as propping up and enabling its far worse rival in Saudi Arabia, which has been the best buddy of the Americans and British since the end of WW2 (because it buys our weapons and supplies us with oil). This is part of the reason why our unsustainable debt levels are such a problem: it makes us dependent on and need to cater to the wants of such scum because we need the money to finance our overblown and oversized bureaucratic superstates. Essentially, owing so much disempowers a nation by making it dependent, and thus incapable of putting luxuries like choosing allies with whom we share common interests and common values first; it's all about da monies.

What's that add up to? Like $100k or something?

Bin Laden's net worth was $300m

Not saying Saudis weren't in play here, but the idea that they had to "finance" that operation is :lol
