Other than a CP3 or Wall, most of the elite PG's are score first kind of PG's in this era. And when I say that, IT'S NOT a negative thing! But those kind of guys typically play the PG due to size. If they were 6'4 and up, most of those guys would be SG's.
That's what made AI so unique!! Larry Brown moved him to the SG early in his Sixers days. The reason why is because his thought process was more like an MJ instead of Isiah (the player AI was compared too a lot). When u have a great defensive PG like Snow who can defend bigger guards, it made a lot of sense.
But in today's era, those kind of guards are staying the point. The only possible drawback with some of them could be floor generalship and passing ability. So if u don't have other players who can pick up the slack in that regard, then the flow of the offense could be a problem. For this era of players, u can see AI's influence more than any other player.

Isn't Kyrie like 6'3"?
The only thing remotely similar between Kyrie and AI is the handle.
AI even at his small stature was more brute force and sheer athleticism than finesse. Kyrie is 99% finesse and an elite long-range jumpshooter, and AI was not.
I don't see it.

AI's handles and score first approach is how he influenced many of today's PG's. It's not saying they play EXACTLY like AI. BUT these guys for all intents and purposes are undersized SG's. Some of them have the handles, dimes, and floor generalship to be great at PG. BUT they do it from a score first approach.
So just like bigger SG's like an MJ, Kobe, West, and Wade could swing to the PG, the smaller guys think the same way. But because of their size, they stay at the PG in this era.

As Jalen Rose is fond of saying, standard 1-5 positions with very rigid "rules" for how/why that player at that position should perform was a way for basketball people to explain how the game works to those who have never played it or don't understand the rules.
Today's NBA is as positionless as it has ever been. Draymond Green was the leading assist man on a team that won 73 games. He's technically a PF/C combo. LeBron James is the Cavs' best assist man... he's a SF/PF, technically.
When every single guy in your rotation can dribble, pass or shoot, it makes you far more dangerous than if you had a standard PG who was the designated playmaker, a SG who is the primary scorer, a C who is the anchor in the middle, etc.
It's not so much that the players have decided to change the way the PG position works... it's that the game has evolved beyond the conventional rules and restrictions, based primarily on your size and not your skillset.
And, it's not something really new either. Look at the great teams of the past. The 1980s Celtics had Dennis Johnson as technically the team's PG, but he was more of an all-around threat whose best attribute was probably his efficient scoring and defense. Larry Bird was their best passer and assist-man.
The 80s Lakers had a 6-foot-9 "point guard," while Byron Scott, Michael Cooper and James Worthy -- all smaller men -- were scorers.
Isiah Thomas was the Pistons' best scorer. He's compared Kyrie Irving to himself openly over the years.
The Bulls team that set the 72-win record had Ron Harper as their "point guard." A good all-around player, to be sure, but certainly not a conventional PG.
Tony Parker has always been a scoring point guard first and a passer second.
The CP3 types are more the exception than the rule, at least when it comes to the best teams.

Well said! The versatility of players between 6'4 and 6'10 has been PREVALENT for years! Dennis Johnson had great years in Phoenix and Seattle as an SG. BUT of course he could swing to the PG and be great there too. There have ALWAYS been those types of guards in the NBA. MJ, Wade, West, etc. were all 6'4 and up and played plenty of PG. Or even from the SG position, they were still often their team's best passer or primary playmaker.
But the NBA has NEVER had this many score first PG's before. It's truly an organic changing of the position. Guys like Big O, Magic, and Isiah led their teams in scoring often, BUT they did it from a pass first-QB perspective. In this era, it's totally opposite. It's not a bad thing either by the way. BUT I'm old school and prefer the Big O-Magic-Isiah-CP3 model PG UNLESS I have a Steph or Westbrook.
