I remember graduating high school and having to pick a major. My train of thought in picking a major was to see which degree is the most in demand. I tried to pick a major that is bulletproof to our economic climate.

It's the smart thing to do. You invest thousands of dollars into your education so you want a return on investment.

Fast forward to 2016, we have students picking majors that they feel they want to be an expert at. These are not real degrees. Stop blaming the system because you chose a degree that is not in demand in regards to employment.

Lol oh ****ing well.

Those people are responsible for their own actions. It's time we start actually holding people responsible instead of giving everyone an 18th chance.

Leftists hijacked the academia ages ago. The arts and social studies are more vulnerable to them compared to maths or sciences. And so they are the first to bear the brunt of the damage, though rest assured it doesn't end there.

The whole thing largely a scam designed to force the entire population into debt, while simultaneously promoting materialist propaganda at every stop. This pushes more people into the system who otherwise would have little cause to be there, making it almost compulsory.

Instead of circlejerking "lol arts sux and is useless!" "uhhh why do we have people studying history instead of becoming engineeers how dumb" like a 12 year old, at least attempt to understand the reasons why these things are happening.

I have an art degree, the drop out rate was over 50%...IIRC those who graduated finding employment after was also less than 50%.

The thing with art -generally speaking- is that it's a talent you were either born with or were not born with. Only so much can be taught.

A huge % of art students go to school only to find out they aren't artists.

^^^ yeah, with my kids I'll be able to know fairly soon if art is a feasible direction.

Most artists like myself were ALWAYS drawing at a young age. When I was 4-5 years old I was drawing non stop...you couldn't find me without a pencil and paper.

If they don't show interest and promise at a young age...investment banker it is! :D

Why do people pay for degrees that will never ever pay themselves off?

Help me understand why people do that.

It's what they love & they are under the assumption the degree WILL pay itself off.

For my AA degree I did liberal arts because I wasn't ready to declare a major. All my credits transferred to my BS so I'm halfway through my BS just working on core classes for my desired major. Some schools do that and if I wanted too I could of gotten something with the AA degree. It was "social sciences and humanities". I don't see how anyone in the right mind would stop there and not move foward. You can't get shit done besides taking jobs from factory workers or uneducated workers who's been at companies for years and being paid more than them as a start.

Do people actually get a bachelor's degree in liberal arts? My god.

Because it used to be worthwhile to go to an institution like uni for these subjects, and many people still think this is the case. Nowadays any Sharkeisha is going to enter the system and drop the standards and quality for everyone, all the while costs go up.

College is the new high school, and a ton of people are there for the wrong reasons or because they only see dollar signs at the end of it. I have less respect for some toothless redneck clown that is there because the football team is good and they want to drink shitty watered down lite beer from red cups, rather than the person who genuinely wants to be an artist and so they go to school for it. Even if they are wasting themselves there

What's the average for all degrees? A degree with 9% unemployment isn't the end of the world. I wouldn't recommend it, but there's probably a whole shit-ton of confounding factors tied up in that graphic beyond "Art and English sux."

i'm more surprised that 90% of them could still find jobs with their bullshit degree

I wouldn't tell anyone not to attend College, because I loved every minute of the experience, which broadened my knowledge of the World on many levels. That said, I spent 8 years in College, paid around 80k in tuition, and I don't use either of my degrees in my chosen profession... and I'm in the process of changing my profession again in my 30's.

It's called baby boomers telling their kids to do what they love even though the economy is completely different.

Governments worldwide are having issues with this as they aren't getting their loans repaid since students are getting degrees that don't pay.

Art and History definitely aren't useless to learn but probably not worth putting a lot of money in to get a degree in.

Clearly, you don't know what science is.
