I still remember when I had to explain to all of you why roy hibbert was a terrible player, and how vehemently everyone disagreed with me. Please don't make me do the same thing with whiteside...Heat fans really need to stop hyping this man up before you look as silly as pacer fans did.

Hibbert wasn't a terrible player in 2013.

I don't think so.

Hibbert legit got worse. People mock him for being trash, but there was a time when he was ok at scoring, ok at rebounding, and a very good defender. It was a short lived peek that came and went too soon, but that doesn't mean he wasn't effective for a bit.

At least he can grab his rebounds, Roy Hibbert cant even rebound.

Hibbert can't do anything anymore. Can't even block guys. 1.5 blocks is worthless given how he doesn't contribute in any other way.

He's only overrated because people think that blocks and steals are measures of good defence. Whiteside is an all-pro shot blocker, but like a guard that spends too much time gambling for steals, he roams in the post and focuses on weak side blocks more than his own man.

Seriously, why do people expect a guy with a year and a half of NBA experience to be a polished team defender? Guys is still learning the game; he is still inconsistent, and will improve; there are times when he's a dominant force on defense, not just blocking shots--he hasn't got consistency yet, gets tired quickly, and then really struggles defending the pick and roll.

He could well end up being the best defender in the NBA.

Whiteside is insanely athletic. It's been a long time since I've seen a center dunk with the kind of ferocity and hops he does. Doesn't seem to have much skill but he definitely has the physical makeup.

Will see what he does when he is playing on a new team next season

Thing is, despite his size, he tends to get bullied by guys like Robin Lopez. He looks really big in the upper body, but he doesn't seem to have the strength to match up to it (or is just soft). Needs to work on his core strength for sure.

He's 26 years old and he's been training and playing basketball his whole life. I think it's safe to say that intangibles are something that doesn't come to him naturally. He's also not a good 1:1 defender. I don't think he'll ever be the best defender in the league.
That being said, I didn't expect him to improve after last season and I was proved wrong, so he could prove me wrong again.

Also I don't think he gets overrated by Heat fans, they've been the ones who often write about his deficiencies. I think the people that overrate him are the box score fans and some LeBron fans who try to shit on Wade.

His man defense needs a lot of work, people like Al Jefferson and Jonas Valanciunas absolutely take him to school in the post. His offense and rebounding is fantastic though; unlike Drummond he actually practices and gets better at certain aspects of his game

Whiteside is basically half of an NBA player. All the physical gifts in the world with the brain of your typical kobe stan. He has to be told what to do on defense and is a huge liability in that department. He doesn't know where he is suppose to be on the floor.

He makes a lot of mental mistakes. Needs more experience.

Wow, that quote perfectly describes Gerald Green back in his Celtics days.
