View Full Version : The Beatles vs. The Beach Boys

Who do you feel is better musically?
Do the Beach Boys deserve the same merit as The Beatles?
Is Brian Wilson the equal of Lennon/McCartney?
I would say Pet Sounds outmatches most Beatles albums with the exception of possibly Sgt. Pepper. And I think had Brian Wilson's mental illness not halted his productivity so early on (round about 1967), the Beach Boys would today be widely considered on the same level artistically as the Beatles, instead of in the nostalgic "surf and cars" way they are now seen.
Drugs really destroyed the Beach Boys. Brian got into really bad stuff, heroin and the like. It's an incredible cautionary tale: the wonder and promise of the 50's and 60's, all pretty girls and fast cars, gives way to the false promises of the psychedelic era. Self-exploration replaces feelings of community and friendship. The song "Surf's Up" summarizes the turning tide of the Beach Boys, America, and Brian Wilson himself. Too lost in a druggy haze, it sees the end of an empire, the end of optimism, the rise and fall of time as the rise and fall of the ocean... Brian's musical genius is glaring, he just went too far into the void.

The Beatles vs. The Beach Boys
both groups are obviously composed of some pretty genius mofos, but after reading various books about them recently, i was still kind of surprised about things.
in terms of the BBoys-- there was a time in which brian was famously 'in his room', and after dennis had narrowly avoided CHARLES F-CKING MANSON, that dennis of all people (the youngest bro, the drummer) was pretty much the leader and most brilliant songwriter of the group.
also, still one of the craziest stories about the BB's-- brian wilson was clearly the beginning and end of why the boys got formed, even back in middle school. meanwhile, mike love (their cousin) was pretty much the family embarrassment, but he somehow had a way with murry wilson (the boys' dad).
and yet, mike love wound up owning the "beach boys" name, even though he's pretty much the worst singer and musician in the band, by far. :P

beach boys are better and more innovative musically, better vocals and harmonies.
Beatles are a better mass market product and better at writing classic pop songs that connect with the masses, and better lyricists.

That song isn't that complex or unique. It's just two songs mashed together and some druggy production.
You're right though, I play and can read music but I suck at composing and song writing. I could never write a song like a Day in the Life.
The Beach Boys have dozens of songs more "complex and unique" than A Day in the Life.
What is it about A Day in the Life that is so unique and "complex" in your world view?
In terms of pure technical songwriting and musical innovation, the Beach Boys are miles beyond the Beatles.
The Beatles were a much better pop band and better at writing mass appeal catchy melodies.

As someone who was born and raised in California, I am going with the Beach Boys. It would be blasphemy for me to choose the Beatles but since I am not a bias person, I will have to vote according their music and one second into California Girls, I will have to say Beach Boys are better than the Beatles and its not even close.
Remember the Beatles school of study was Pet Sounds.
The pinnacle of the Beatles would be Hey Jude and their early stuff wasn't very good but they did make some classics later.
Nothing from the Beatles can touch these records:
(Please YT these songs and give it another listen. It never gets old)
-California Girls
-Little Deuce Coupe
-I Get Around
-Surfer Girl
-Good Vibrations
-Wouldn't It Be Nice
-Help Me Rhonda
Plus the mood in the music is a big factor, while not all of them were surfers, I believe only one of them were, the California vibe and music is much better than the dark gloomy influence of the Liverpool band.
You put a Beatles' song on and people will recognize it. You put a Beach Boy song on and everyone is dancing to it and doing the twist.
That is all. Surfs up.

As someone who was born and raised in California, the Beatles and it aint an argument.
For starters, The Beach Boys used studio musicians for most of their work. Outside of Animal Sounds and perhaps one more, the Beach Boys don't have the discog to even be in the same breath. Some of their most popular sounds sound alike, while the Beatles' range is consistently wider.
And at the end of the day, The Beatles simply have the most/best songs. Strip away the albums, the innovation, the influence, the pioneering, etc.etc. if you go down the line of every song recorded, The Beatles win out.

The beach boys weren't about being instrumental virtuosos. Their strength is in their harmonies and compositions. They are miles ahead of the beatles in terms of pure musical innovation.
The Beatles are better at creating catchy mainstream pop songs and being more marketable people. The Beatles were One Direction level heartthrobs and wrote more catchy pop melodies with immediate mass appeal, and great at the "Call Me Maybe" instantly catchy hook. The Beach Boys were lame looking dudes in contrast, and Brian Wilson, as big a genius as he was, was nowhere near as marketable as the dudes in the Beatles. That's the only reason the main stream recognizes the Beatles ahead of the Beach Boys. That's it. Image.
In terms of pure music, the Beach Boys are miles ahead of the beatles and about 40 years ahead of their time, compared to the Beatles who sound awesome but are beginning to sound very dated. Pet Sounds sounds like it could have come out a month ago.
In terms of being rock stars, the Beatles are better.
In terms of music, the Beach Boys are miles ahead and it isn't close.
The Beatles are pretty much on par with the Kinks musically-which isn't a bad thing-the Kinks are great.
Just not Beach Boys great.
This is some next level songwriting. The Beatles never made it to this level musically. Again note how these songs sound like they could have come out yesterday. That is the sign of truly innovative musicianship.

wtf you mean "so what?"
Not only were they studio musicians, they CREATED the music. It wasn't like all the studio musicians do was play sheet music that was given to them.
That means they didn't create the music, thus eliminating them from the convo.
As far as melodies are concerned, they sound the same. I can play Beach Boys music and most won't be able to tell the songs apart because they sound very much alike.
This idiot talking about outdated when the Beatles were no.1 just a few years ago when they re-released their catalog. Not only were they no.1 music sales, they were no.1 in streaming as well.
Shit, why is this even an argument.
The Beatles have tons of songs that are ageless. Im not talking about 'I wanna hold your hand' Im referring to 'In My Life', 'Yesterday', 'Hey Jude', 'Yesterday', 'Let it Be', 'Something' etc.etc. etc. those songs SHIT all over the Beach Boys, and that's just getting started.
Hell, those are just the more accessible mainstream songs, very few Beach Boys songs can come close to their more brilliant experimental stuff such as 'I Am the Walrus', 'Strawberry Fields', 'I Want You', etc.etc.etc.
Don't even try to reply, you have no argument.

That song isn't that complex or unique. It's just two songs mashed together and some druggy production.
Any song that changes its theme will sound like two songs mashed together. Prog band thrived on that the linked together more than two themes, but kept repeating them throughout the song/album.
Pet Sounds kickstarted something for the Beatles, but they put up the blue print for several genres.
Wilson himself was a great songerwriter during their period, but even the more serious, post "we copy Chuck Berry licks on twangy strats" - Surf & Fun, Beach Boys still sounded like themselves and part of that is the employing of vocal harmonies the just explored more "complex" chord progressions, but the "Pet Sounds" Beach Boys at the core still sound like the "Surfer Girl" Beach Boys. The Sgt through Abbey Road Beatles didn't even closely sound to the "Hard Day's Night" Beatles.
I agree though, I don't think "A Day In The Life" is that special. Abbey Road starting from "I Want You(She's So Heavy)" on the other hand is.
Good Vibrations is a top 10 track OAT aswell.
Carol Kaye and Macca changed the way a certain instrument, the one I play, forever. So much respect for both bands in that regard.

Brian Wilson wrote and composed all of his arrangements. The session musicians played what he wrote.
He was the Beethoven of pop music, and one of the greatest vocalists of the 20th century, if not THE greatest (I'd put Aretha Franklin ahead of him)
The songwriting of Brian Wilson, co-founder and multi-tasking leader of the Beach Boys, is widely considered one of the most innovative and significant of the late 20th century, and his work is credited as a major innovation in the field of music production. Through his band, "[Brian] pretty much single-handedly raised the craft of pop songwriting from the awkwardly sub-lunar to the gracefully sublime," writes Jeff Miers of The Buffalo News, while Adam Webb of The Guardian wrote: "Brian proved pop music could be high art with limitless imagination."

The Beatles don't own "chord progressions" and they didn't invent any that were used in Surf's Up and Feel Flows:hammerhead: Stop pretending like you understand musical terms when you don't.

In contrast, George Martin and Phil Spector WROTE AND ARRANGED much of the background music used in Beatles songs, especially on the White Album, Let it Be, Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt Pepper.
If you call Justin Bieber "manufactured", you also have to call the Beatles "manufactured" considering how much the Beatles music was written by their producers.
The Beatles were great lyricists and great at catchy hooks and had a great image.

George Martin wrote the music in Day in the Life.
Do you know that A Day in the Life was just two seperate songs written by Lennon and McCartney that they didn't know what to do with. George Martin is entirely responsible for taking those two vocal tracks, mashing them up in to one song, and then orchestrating and arranging all of the music in that song. George Martin composed and arranged and conducted the backing music in the Sgt Peppers album, as well as Beatles tracks on subsequent albums.
Lennon and McCartney are only responsible for the lyrics and vocal melody. The instrumentals, musical arrangement and mashup was entirely written by George Martin.

Brian Wilson did write and arrange all of the Beach Boys songs that are credited to Brian Wilson. That is why he is universally hailed as a genius.
The Beatles are One Direction.
The Beach Boys are Beethoven.
One has more mass appeal.
The other is better musically.
Beach Boys are 40 years head of their time at least.
The Beatles are dated and their musically "innovative" arrangements they get so much credit for were written by their producers.
The Beatles write better lyrics and catchier hooks than the Beach Boys but that's it.
And early pre-Pet Sounds Beach Boys had hooks easily on par with the Beatles best hooks. The Beach Boys not being as recognized by the main stream doesn't mean they are worse. it just means the main stream recognizes the more marketable and mainstream stars with the mainstream image, the Beatles. The Beach Boys in contrast are not marketable. Brian Wilson was an overweight and mentally ill person. The Beatles were teen hearthrobs, and better at being rock stars and they were cooler people.
That is why they are recognized ahead of the Beach Boys by the mainstream.

Musically, the Beach Boys have proven to be far more innovative, influential, and ahead of their time than the Beatles were.
In terms of being rock stars and having an awesome mythos with more marketable personalities, and also in terms of lyrics (I will definitely give that edge to the Beatles), the Beatles were better.

Many it was two songs on Sgt. and one or two on the S/T. Let It Be was a throw-away album that got resurrected. Not a big fan of that.
McCartney wrote the lyrics for all his songs, but "All my loving" after the music, as do most songwriters.

Not saying they are worse, I don't rate music like that. I just like them less. You're saying Wilson was ahead 40 years, but there was neither a surf nor a baroque pop revival in the mid 2000s.
Musically, the Beach Boys have proven to be far more innovative, influential, and ahead of their time than the Beatles were.
Musically doubtful. Their genre died with them and their music didn't spread into other genres much. The influenced the Beatles' opus magnus, though, which influenced a lot of others for about a decade.
What they did, or Wilson by himself, was changing the way music was recorded. Away from single track mono live recordings to multitrack layers. The Beatles' later albums wouldn't have been possible without this.

pop music is dead?:confusedshrug:
Their music spread everywhere. The Ramones started out as a bunch of dudes trying to play Beach Boys songs. The Ramones later went on to inspire punk rock in the late 70s. Not to mention their influence on modern electronica and EDM, as well as modern indie pop artists like Belle and Sebastien, The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, the Shins and Animal Collective. The Ramones doing Beach Boys covers in some garage doesn't mean their catalogue is based in ther music. They didn't break out as a civerband, but as a unique act and I'd love to know where you draw the connections to the Beach Boys. btw Status Quo also started out as a Beach Boys cover band.
The only band you listed I know more than one song is Radiohead and there's no immediate connection to the Beach Boys' music imo.

Not just that, whatever or whoever he states were influenced by Beach Boys the same can be said by Beatles times a hundred.
He has no argument in any way.
So if he states Beach Boys influenced Ramones...
Beatles influenced Sabbath, Nirvana, Hendrix, Stones, Bowie, Dylan, NAS, KRS, Zeppelin, Stevie, Prince, Marley, etc etc etc times a million

RIP the Beatles legacy. Their music is a relic of the past. The Beach Boys continue to influence new genres and bands every day. They are the Beethoven of pop music.

that's definitely not true.
They wrote great lyrics and catchy pop hooks. That's it. Their producer George Martin is responsible for most of their cool compositions and arrangements. Sorry bro. It's just facts.
Beach Boys were doing things that were technically miles beyond anything the Beatles achieved.

Virtually every rock critic puts the Beatles on top of the Beach Boys.
I like both but it's the Beatles by a lot, in fact, it's not even close.
Anyone who compares the Beatles to One Direction should instantly be ignored and taken out back and shot for the good of all humanity.

fwiw, nobody denies that Martin is a part of who the Beatles are. Its not something to be ashamed of.
Its a fun conversation, and the Beach Boys get underrated, but saying shit like the Beatles are One Direction and the Beach Boys are Beethoven just makes you sound like an asshat, even if the BBs are better. One Direction is crap, Lennon and Mccartney might be 2 of the 3 best song writers in pop music history. Nobody is going to say that about One DIrection. One Direction doesn't play instruments etc. You act like The Beatles stopped making music after "I wanna hold your hand". Just stop. We all get it, you feel Brian Wilson is under credited. move on
