View Full Version : In retrospect how bad is Curry falling to #7?

They called him undersized and unable to get his shot off in the NBA. Of course, these were legitimate concerns at the time. But now we know better. WITH hindsight, how bad was the pick?

The only bigger draft travesty I can think of Brady going in round 6 199th pick of the NFL draft, but football is different.

Hakeem Olajuwon went first in the 1984 draft (the correct pick with context even without hindsight) and the infamous Sam Bowie #2 pick ahead of Jordan is pretty bad. However Bowie lied about his health status and he was an athletic 7' guy who outplayed the likes of Hakeem and Ewing in college. It's not really the Blazers' fault that Bowie had lied about his health. Blake to the Clips is a solid choice even with hindsight because you do want to take your bigmen first.
But Curry after Flynn/Harden/Rubio/Thabeet/Evans is probably worse than Jordan after The Dream and Bowie.

1.Blake Griffin Los Angeles Clippers
2. Hasheem Thabeet Memphis Grizzlies
3. James Harden Oklahoma City Thunder
4. Tyreke Evans Sacramento Kings
5. Ricky Rubio Minnesota Timberwolves*(from*Washington)
6. Jonny Flynn Minnesota Timberwolves
7.Stephen Curry Golden State Warriors

NO ONE...not ONE person ever expected Curry to be THIS good. I mean, he will be all time top 10 if he can stay healthy for a couple more seasons, and will push MJ and Shaq for GOAT peak. That is pretty insane for a prospect out of Davidson.

Blake is a little younger than Curry and still has mega potential as a big that can do a little of everything.

The only bad picks were Hasheem and Jonny. Tyreke wasn't that bad at the time. That was a pretty weak draft class.

Tyreke had one of the craziest rookie seasons ever.

Blake came out of the gate a 20-10 big. (Albeit the next year after breaking his leg)

Thabeet was a bad pick.

Harden was better than Steph coming out. Had more skills that translated to the NBA.

Tyreke was a 6'6 230lb point guard with decent vision and could bully his way to the basket whenever he wanted. Also he won ROY out of this group avg 20-5-5 as a Rookie. I feel like he's been miscast as a SF ever since. Give him the ball and move and he would've been fantastic.

Rubio was seen as a basketball prodigy who was playing pro ball at 14.

Flynn was supposed to be very good as well. Excelled in PnR. Ended up a bust.

Steph....well we know what happened :applause:

At least the Wizards got Randy Foye and Mike Miller for the 5th pick

At the time picking BG over Curry was totally understandable. Harden too

But the real losers here are the T'Wolves, how do you pick two point guards back to back and pass on Curry both times.

Not as bad as the many scouts/pundits that had Curry in the late first round, right up to the draft.
