It's these new age superstars
LeBron was the last of the old school mentality superstars
The game was more raw and real back then
It just doesn't compare today

- those 2000 kids grew up and are now hogging the ball parks in their local community (we are known to kick little kids off the court if there is no available rim)

Lebron was only must watch tv because he was on the heat and everyone wanted to see him lose. No kids ever wanted to be "Like LBJ" so that explains the disinterest. Early 2000s had kids wanting to be mj kobe ai and vince. Those guys make people want to play. Cant say the same about lebron.
just watch interest go back up now that curry is the face of the league

Sadly, it's true.

This is why the late 00s/ early 10s LeBron era was the GOAT era.

Technology is the issue.
Even for me, some days I'd rather just play some video games than go hoop for 2-3 hours.

one theory I have is that the growing digital culture is affecting sports participation.
video game leagues are on the upswing.
Twitch broadcasts.
etc

I used to mention that I see a lot less kids playing basketball a few years ago than I did in the 90s.
Probably has more to do with the internet and social media. (All the teenagers I know are really into texting and Facebook, and it has a very distracting effect.) I bet the ones who are active probably play less because of the Internet. They're really into social media etc.
I remember like back in 99 I would put on my Jordan VHS and copy techniques, and it was so focused, and then go out and try to destroy my friends. I don't think I would be as focus and that would be less fun. (So while the internet is overall great because of the vast amount of information, I really miss how you could really enjoy what you had because there was nothing else distracting you from it.)
Also, instead of practicing real moves, most kids I see today are just dribbling and dribbling over and over and going "Ooooooh," while destroying the opponent is secondary.

Well, more kids played during the Magic/Bird era.
"Among youth 6 to 17 years of age, participation in baseball, football, and basketball has decreased by approximately 30% since 1990, while participation in extreme sports like in-line skating, skateboarding, and snowboarding increased 600% (SGMA, 2005)."

They're all playing video games now. But America still sucks at that.
It has a lot to do with technology, not wanting to get dunked on with video cameras constantly monitoring play by plays. Always wanting to be inside or people just focus more on heavy school work given by schools. Video games has a lot to do with it as well. Who wants to play basketball real life when you can play 2k.

The 600% is nothing due to the small number of participants of those sports...

i think i coud make some money if I created a robotic exoskeleton that would respond to the movements of an nba2k avatar. then people could wear the suit and play real basketball. yes.

In the future, we won't even need real people to enjoy the NBA.

Oh, Wilt played against a bunch of midgets eh?
Well, Jordan Prime (created in a lab) will dominate a bunch of humans so his records will not be taken seriously either. Cyborg.
When the whole league becomes robotic, then the new records will be taken seriously.

Well the "bigger talent pool today" argument is officially dead.
