View Full Version : Homeless Drunks: Help me understand.

From my observations, the homeless drunks in Portland, Maine (my home) buy 24 ounce cans of cheap beer for $1. That appears to be the "go-to". If they saved their money they could buy a handle of liquor for $13-20, making the per drink price as low as 32-50 cents per drink (roughly 40 shots in a handle). I'm guessing they would just drink too much and pass out but that seems to be happening anyway.
Why are so many homeless buying cheap beer over liquor? Am I missing something?
:confusedshrug:
(This post is not meant to be offensive. I myself buy relatively cheap handles and find comfort in spending less than 50 cents for a drink. I'm simply trying to understand the mindset and motivation of these individuals)

homeless people drink until they pass out falling all over the place and wind up in jail or the hospital...a handle would just go to waste

Yea you're missing the fact that it would take much longer to beg for 15 bucks cumulatively than it is to scrounge $1 and some change together for a drink from people who throw em a few cents and whatnot.
True drunks are ALWAYS fiending for a drink so they'd rather get one as frequently as possible than be patient and maybe have to wait days at a time to get a handle.
Plus, that handle would then become a valuable commodity and homeless ppl have their own little network so it would be more risky to keep it around and risk being jacked.
Dudes want their fix like any other addiction and waiting/carrying a handle seems too risky.

I super glued a quarter to the pavement at 2 of the closest pan-handling spots near my apartment :oldlol:
They lasted about 3 days and then were pulled off somehow, maybe city workers.
I thought it might lead the homeless to work together and brainstorm ideas on how to retrieve the quarters. (which might have happened)

If they would be able to think like that, they probably wouldnt be homeless.

Maybe in Maine, but the bums in Houston rack up in a few hours of sitting at the intersections. Many take home more on a daily basis than most Americans.

Be careful, little white boy...ending up like the people you make fun of is perfect justice.
Although I do pray for your soul and hope you lead a successful life.

Maybe they actually enjoy the taste of beer? As it is, they're only paying 50 cents a drink, the same as they would be getting with a $20 handle. :confusedshrug:
And obviously what ROC said, but I just assumed you weren't a retard

Beer is also food/calories which the homeless are in need of.
Liquor not so much, so it's also a 2 birds 1 stone thing I would assume.

Good point, I overlooked this last night (24 ounce can = 2 drinks). I never drink beer (although I do enjoy cider). So I guess the homeless are doing alright after all.

They are homeless for a reason.
You don't get to this point if you are capable of having both the foresight and discipline to follow the plan that you are outlining.
Majority of them are mentally ill as well.

From my observations, the homeless drunks in Portland, Maine
Where do the homeless drunks hang out in Portland? Every time I've been there I hardly ever see any.
I try and get up there every summer and last year a friend of mine who lives in Yarmouth was talking about the "dangerous section of Portland". I had to laugh. The area around the hospital seems a little sketchy but nothing compared to some sections of Charlotte.

They have to wait to save up enough for the handle. The beer they can get immediately.

I live right across from Deering Oaks park. When it's nice out they are a lot of them sleeping and taking up the benches in the park. Also by Oxford street, which is where the largest homeless shelter is.
The dangerous area is considered to be around Sherman and Grant street which is very close to where I live, although I never see any action. There are a decent amount of drug busts, etc in that area. But yeah compared to other cities its a stretch to call any area of Portland dangerous.
Homeless people aren't investors doe

wouldn't a $1 for a 24oz also be 50 cents a drink :confusedshrug:
1 shot = 1 12oz beer

Please read thread. Ace23 pointed this out already and I gave him credit. The homeless are not as lost and confused as I thought. Good for them.
