They had a single down year because their star was injured but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise because it netted them Tim Duncan.

That's 25+ years of pure contending or at least being better than most teams. And likely to continue for more years now with Kawhi and Aldridge leading the way.

...to be fair...they only landed Duncan because Robinson played 7 games in the 97 season. The 96 Spurs led by Big Dave won 59 games...with him only playing 7 shitty games in 97 they won 27 games with the 27th rated offense and dead last in defense at 29...they were 9th in offense and 3rd in defense with a healthy david robinson...how ****ing underrated is Big Dave? That people actually think duncan was better than Robinson is an hilarious joke.

Tim Duncan has NEVER carried a team like David Robinson did, period.

Spurs will be the Spurs. They'll be a contender pretty much every season. No one wins every year, but there's one team that makes the playoffs every year.

uh the 03 Spurs were carried pretty hard. Big Dave is underrated as hell however and I wouldn't argue with someone who has peak Drob over peak Duncan. Hell he has an argument over peak Hakeem.

Robinson's legacy was basically stained by one series vs Hakeem, which is very unfair, as Hakeem was playing as good as anyone ever for that period of time.

True. Robinson's team won most of their head to head matchups even before Duncan was drafted.

I bet most people don't know Hakeem's FG% average dropped from ~51% to ~44% when he faced Robinson's Spurs. And this was before Duncan arrived.

The Spurs also doesn't trade very often, if they try, they'll get big names. Aldridge was a big name they signed recently. They are experimenting whether or not big name players will enjoy the area and decides to stay.

They are probably great at re-negotiating contracts.

Sean Elliot also missed majority of the season that year.

They brought back Nique, though!

I've always maintained Robinson was one of if not the goat one man army reg season guys, but I do remember a 36 yr old Dominique Wilkins being the best player on that teamThree of San Antonio's five starters missed the majority of the season that year (David Robinson, Charles Smith, Sean Elliott).

It was awful. Robinson was my all-time favorite player at that point and when I finally got my wish—Spurs/Pistons tickets—Robinson went and got himself injured a week later. I figured at least I'd be able to see some other guys I loved (modeled my shot after Sean Elliott's). Alas, that night the Spurs rolled out a lineup of Avery Johnson, Vernon Maxwell, Monty Williams, Carl Herrera, and Will Perdue. Even Dominique Wilkins was out that night. Just... terrible.

Oh, I also thought Gregg Popovich was a punk at the time. Firing Bob Hill for struggling to lead a team that was decimated by injuries was lame enough, but to take over the team himself from there on out? Of course, I knew nothing about the real situation over there, but I was not a fan of the changeover at first.

Edit: Just took a look at the roster. The only Spur to play all 82 games that year: Cadillac Anderson. That's what kind of year it was.

Not true. Once they went after LMA, that was their rebuilding process.

This is always something that got swept under the rug. D-Rob tanked the 97 season with his "injury" in order for them to get Duncan.
