Why is the NBA split in half? And then further split into divisions? Why in 2016 is this necessary? What are some good arguments for keeping it the way it is?

Because they travel too much if they played each conference evenly

Maybe if they get rid of conferences they might have less games each season

It is actually an interesting question. The relevence may well be dwindling. Flights? Maybe? But if that is the only reason, that is pretty weak.
