While it's true Phil lost less series as the favorite, he inherited all of his teams rather them buildong/developing them from scratch, though he did have a big hand in taking them to that championship level. He had more overall talent than Pop on his teams throughout his career. He coached the primes of MJ, Shaq, Scottie and Kobe, all of whom were gift-wrapped to him.

It's hard to argue with 11 > 5. 11 chips as a head coach is insane, but so are the teams he was fortunate enough to coach. It's hard to compare coaches at that level, but Pop has proven to know how to build sustainable models for success, and while managing egos is something Jackson had his hands full with, it's really hard to imagine too many egos clashing under a guy like Popovich. Jackson had more success, but I'd rather my team follow the "Pop way" because it's probably more versatile and easier to implement with less talent.

Jackson has had Jordan, Pip, Shaq and Kobe for his 11 titles.

Pop has had Duncan and essentially a bunch of role players for 5 titles. Who else did he have? Declining D-Rob, Parker, Manu and Kawhi hardly compare to the above.

Pop's the GOAT coach.

I personally think Phil's coaching resume is more impressive, taking into account both the success and the teams they had at hand...

Jackson is the GOAT.

Lately, all Pop is the GOAT at, is getting outcoached in the playoffs. Never really had Phil doing that.

I think Phil is a better coach game to game, but if you want someone that will install a winning philosophy Pop is the best. You can tell by how his disciples do as well.

This Phil Jackson never losses to an 8th seed team, and for the first time in NBA History a 67 wins team was eliminated in the 2nd round of the playoffs.

OP uses ring count as his main argument for coaches

Disregards ring count for players

K

All of the arguments you would make for Lebron > Kobe if somebody was using ring count against you, would be to bring up supporting cast, which is the same argument people would use for Pop in an argument against Phil.

But when you rank coaches, you ignore that PJ had the the goat, two other all time greats and a top 50 player in Pippen while Pop had Duncan, but Parker & Manu don't even come close to Pippen let alone Kobe or Shaq.

Way to be consistent

Not gonna dispute this point but the 2007 Mavs lost in round 1 with the same amount of wins.

How many titles did those 4 all-time greats have without Phil?

I believe the answer is ....

The last few years Pop's had some blemishes on his resume Phil's never had.

Losing to the 8th seeded Grizzlies
Blowing a 2-0 lead in the 2012 WCF
Benching Duncan twice during Game 6's legendary collapse
Winning 67 games and failing to reach the WCF

Avery Johnson another Greg Popovich was out coached by their former coach Don Nelson.

Nah. Pop is clearly better and able to adapt with different styles and players. Phil generally had the same set up everywhere he went.

I'd take Pat Riley over Phil too. Phil is good for 3rd place.
People forget Riley has won 7 championships in a coaching and management role.

Phil had a stretch where his teams went 44-3 in playoff series.

And I don't know if he's the best but I damn sure don't remember any of his teams winning 65+ games and losing in the 2nd round. Or losing 8 times with HCA.

one thing people might forget because of how much Pop rested his players the last few years is he's more of a regular season coach than Phil. His teams try harder, actually makes adjustments during games etc. Thibs is one of the best examples of this with his Bulls team. Phil frequently has "underachieved" during the regular season good examples being the 93 Bulls and 01 Lakers.

Everybody who isn't a Spurs homer knows that Phil >>>>>>>>>>>> Pop and it's not even close.

Though Pop >>>>>>> most other coaches, but The Zen Master is on a whole different level of greatness from all other coaches except perhaps Red (but Phil still > Red).

It's very hard to decide given all Phil's accolades, but I have to go with Pop. 1 team the whole time, and got the most out of his situation. I also love his candor with the media. Pop's pretty special.
