The acquistion of Channing Frye might prove to be the championship winning addition... So far in the playoffs he's lived up to all and every expectation, finding good minutes taking over Mozgov's position as backup to Tristan/Kevin. We all knew what he offered on offense, especially with LeBron... What we all wondered was what he could offer on the defensive end... He hasn't disappointed.

Let's run the tale of the tape!

8.3 PPG
2.6 RPG
0.5 APG
0.4 SPG
0.5 BPG
62%/58%/80%
(14.9 MPG)

Pretty solid raw statistics for a bench player I'd say. Especially those shooting/scoring splits!

But where the real kudos is shown is in some of the advanced metrics;

143 Offensive Rating
105 Defensive Rating
23.2 PER
80% True Shooting
0.6 WS
+7.0 BPM
+17.3 Net Rating (+23.8 when on the court)

Some truly crazy numbers!

Now let's crunch some numbers and see what his ISBDB™ and ISBOB™ are,

+0.16 ISBDB™
+1.03 ISBOB™

Damn. Those are some impressive numbers. He's been a killer on offense, but hasn't given an inch on defense. This is of crazy value, and what we all wondered about him on this team. He has the size (6-11), but did he have the energy, strength and tenacity to play like a bruising center when required. IMO he's passed with flying colors.

Now; how does this make him such an X-Factor? Well. It allows Cleveland to essentially go small, without losing size or too much rebounding. It's the perfect counter to the heralded GSW "Death Lineup" with Draymond at center. Situation and lineup wise, he's been exactly what the Cavs needed to fill out a bigman trio of Love, Thompson and Frye. Frye gives Cleveland options for lineups... If Love is struggling defending, he can be switched out for Frye, and they don't lose any perimeter shooting. It also has awakened a potential of a super lineup.. Let's look at the lineup stats;

Delly-Shump-Jefferson-LeBron-Frye:
130 Offensive Rating
81 Defensive Rating
43 Minutes used
Pace: 88
eFG: 69%
True Shooting: 69%
Rebound: 52%

Irving-Smith-LeBron-Love-Frye:
114 Offensive Rating
103 Defensive Rating
15 Minutes used
Pace: 98
eFG: 55%
True Shooting: 57%
Rebound: 59%

With these two, you have a nice couple of different lineups, one with a slow pace and one with an uptempo pace. One with mainly bench players, and the other with starters.

Frye is all over the best 4, 3 and 2 man lineups for Cleveland

For example with 2 man lineups;

Frye-Love is the best
134 Offensive Rating
94 Defensive Rating
29 Minutes used
Pace: 96
eFG: 63%
True Shooting: 65%
Rebound: 59%

Followed swiftly by Frye-Delly
125 Offensive Rating
88 Defensive Rating
82 Minutes used
Pace: 91
eFG: 67%
True Shooting: 67%
Rebound: 53%

And then Frye-LeBron
121 Offensive Rating
91 Defensive Rating
86 Minutes used
Pace: 92
eFG: 62%
True Shooting: 62%
Rebound: 50%

I truly believe Frye-Love is the secret weapon that the Cavaliers have been keeping under wraps, using it selectively here and there. Against Golden State, I think it could be a crucial pairing in a slowed pace environment, that could tip the favor the Cavs way.
