View Full Version : Here's why today's game is a joke

.
The result of today's 3-point shooting/spacing is that possessions have devolved into gimmicky, hot potato-style ball movement to scramble the spaced-out defenders until some unskilled robot like Klay Thompson is open for another 3-pointer.

This is EXACTLY how today's game proceeds on every possession - how is that considered "better basketball"?

Ultimately, 3-pointers are mostly catch-and-shoot, while 2-pointers are scored in infinitely more diverse ways.. Furthermore, 2-pointers are more CONTESTED, thus requiring more skill: NBA.com's stats show that over 80% of 3-pointers are taken with 4+ feet of room (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=404693), compared to only 30% for 2-pointers.

Since 2-pointers are scored in more ways and are more contested, the eras that shot more 2-pointers produced better players - for example, Lowry was 10th in MVP voting this year, compared to Shaq in 1996 - there are many examples like this.

If you think this series AND especially Saturday nights game was a "joke", you're not a real fan of basketball.

One can still be a player-zealot while appreciating OTHER players and teams from various eras. Just an FYI.

He's gone on record to say he doesn't watch today's game or hasn't since 2010 or 11.

I agree. Golden State's style of basketball is horrible. So boring. They played far worse than OKC last game but stayed in it with a freak three-point shooter hitting everything he jacked up.

Not that I take the claim seriously, but you gotta be one crazy motherf*cker to log onto various basketball forums and endlessly talk about games, players and teams you don't...actually watch.

I think it was in a thread where he and AJ were discussing and he brought it up and he (along with others) just started lashing out at him.

I'll try to find it when I get the chance.

Here's another reason why the NBA's a joke today:

I got really excited when I saw someone take a jumpshot that wasn't a 3 pointer in game 6. Constant 3's layups and FT's with no 2 point shots or post movies makes for mediocre ball. It took a guy to break the 3 point NBA record to keep it exciting.

Yes, above is the #1 problem with today's game...so completely stupid. Just wait for Lebron-ball to completely ruin all chances for Cleveland again this year.

It doesn't matter how much the NBA tries to shove guys like LeBron, Curry, Durant, Westbrook and Leonard along with THE HORRIBLE BRAND OF BASKETBALL being played in today's NBA, they don't even COME CLOSE to the ratings Jordan, Bird, Magic, Isiah, Stockton, Malone, Drexler, Dr J, Moses, Kareem and Olajuwon got in the 80's and 90's!

Last years TV ratings for the Cavs-Warriors, which is basically the biggest matchup the present NBA can hope to get for the Finals, drew a 11.6 RATING!!! The highest it got since 2000!!!!

After the NBA got out of tape delay in 1982 until Jordan's final year in 1998 the Finals NEVER DIPPED BELOW 12.0 peaking with an 18.7 in 98'!!!! Hell some of the all-star game network TV ratings in the 90's were higher than last year's Finals! LOL!!! The NBA Finals started declining the second Michael Jordan retired from the Bulls and not Kobe, Duncan, Shaq, LeBron or Curry have been able to recover it!

The NBA right now is full of young, raw, inefficient, fundamentally flawed, 3-point chucking, AAU developed BFF pus!ies who would rather join up than beat the living hell out of each other!

90's NBA Goat give me a break with that excuse!!!

The NFL saw it's HIGHEST SUPER BOWL RATING in history for last year's game!!! And has no problem still climbing their regular season TV ratings!!!

The NBA WILL ALWAYS BE A NICHE SPORT!!! That was BRIEFLY taken out of the cellar and brought out to the dance with the NFL and MLB for a brief period from 1982 to 1998 lead by Magic, Bird, Jordan and the INSANE supporting cast of stars the league had during that period!

Shaq, Kobe, LeBron, Duncan, Westbrook, Durant or Curry don't have the MAGNITUD of those 80's players and have driven the league DOWN IN QUALITY during their reign.

Me neither, I will watch OKC v Cavs though. OKC are great to watch when they are sharing the rock and not playing ISO ball.

A Blazer fan dissing GSW's style of play?

Am I missing something here?

Amian Lillar is Curry lite, how are you gonna disrespect the guy your boy wishes he was.

The meltdowns are real right now!

Pretty sure NBA shoots itself in the foot with ratings when it blacks out games.

You have to watch an illegal stream when you've paid for a service. That's just like the days with DRM mp3s bought off itunes; you get less functionality when you pay for a product.

NBA really needs to fix that. It's disgusting.

Such idiots here using ratings as a barometer. There are a lot of people that watch the games online (both legally and otherwise). More importantly, those ratings don't take into the account the tens of millions watching around the world.

The

What a retard you are!
More people watches the NBA now worldwide than they did in the 80's.
The ratings are lower because 1) online streams 2) more options: there are more channels, more tv shows, Netflix, facebook, youtube, etc.
Still, worldwide the NBA is more watched now than your beloved 1980's.

How ever anyone feels about this argument, but really? Shitty online streams are taking away ratings here in the US? 1st the vast majority of people don't know what a stream is. Then for the tiny minority that do there might be that rare time when they might want to view one. When that time comes they usually have to ask around, probably in a forum, and then they have to hope that's it has a somewhat passable quality, and then that it doesn't suddenly go off line. What percentage of the average NBA viewer frequent forums, where it's normally the only place where they can find a decent one. And then of those people that go to NBA forums, how many of them are in a particular game thread with 50+ pages, where someone gave a link to a stream on page 6.

Anyway, some good points on how I feel about the league. Hot potato basketball, where the team that played with most skills doesn't necessarily win just because a less skilled player happened to be hot from the 3s on that one particular night.
