Thing is, most people dont actually know much about Hawking.

He's been proven wrong many times in his own field, especially early in his career. Of course there's no shame in being wrong, but his actual body of career work is nowhere near on par with guys like einstein, newton, heisenberg, bohr, etc. He was even dismissed as a pretender by other physicists earlier in his career. He was not some game-changing prodigy. The fact that Hawking is now a wheelchair-bound elderly scientist who talks through this elaborate computer is easily the greatest factor in why he's developed this genius image in the public consciousness. He looks the part, so people who dont know anything about science just assume he must have the intellect of a demigod.

Again, the vast majority of people who think Hawking is "the smartest man in the world" probably could not name a single thing he's actually contributed scientifically. They just hear others say it, figure he looks like he probably is, so people just repeat it.

His views on politics are as relevant as Clay Aiken's.
