Ali was VEHEMENTLY against interracial marriage.
Luckily hes not white or else he'd get zero respect in his passing, simply for having that opinion. Most people saying "RIP, u were am@zing!!" in this thread would be scorning the hell out of him if he were white.

Why?
Because he boxed good?
He was a racist and a prick and the same people who piss their pants about 'racist old white men' are shovin a tongue up Ali's dead ass.

It would depend why someone's against it, tbh. And personally I dont care if someone is or isnt.
But to the liberals in this thread? Let's be real. No white person could ever justify being against interracial marriage without being smeared and scorned as a racist neanderthal. Again, these same posters will claim that "Trump's a rassissist!!!!" for saying we shouldnt let illegals in, and theyre in here like "omg ali i luv u, ur the greatest champ, u boxed so gudddd!!!"

Well of course there's going to be a lot of people going crazy yet who probably don't know much at all themselves about boxing; wouldn't be able to tell you who joe louis is. But that's their problem. Same thing applies with the leftist crowd. It's something that's bound to to happen so dunno why even get worked up about it unless this is where you draw the line and you're determined that the bucks stops here.
Cassius Clay is a part of American history; with some of the most iconic and legendary matches of all time. Controversy definitely included in that legacy. Yet out of the tons of fans he had, how many are ardent black nationalists or subscribed to the shit he said half a century ago? All 20 of them are probably on ISH

With regards to the interracial marriage thing, I believe he changed his mind on that.
You have to understand the context of the times, in the 60s he was part of the NOI which advocated for blacks and whites to seperate because black people were being treated inhumanely in America and that was pretty much standard belief for the NOI (that there should not be integration at all).
He later left the NOI. Many of Ali's closest friends and people associated with him were white, I don't believe him to be a racist, you can tell just by the footage for example that he loved Howard Cossel and that was one of the most iconic relationships in sports.

I'm white, and I'll tell you what's wrong with your logic bro.
You're comparing comments made by a great boxer during an era of extreme racism against Africans to a time like today. Ali was an icon, a role model and a status to black people everywhere. His voice was heard because of his ability to influence people. He stood behind his people, when they were highly undervalued in society.
You think that's equivalent to Trump saying racist shit against immigrants? You need to understand the other sides point of view, the rights between the blacks and the whites during Ali's time was not equal, far from it. In a way, he stood for them because he could be heard and possibly influence institutional changes. Trump saying this today, who was born with a silver spoon, about immigrants just isn't the same. The message and meaning behind his words don't have the same impact.
If Ali was in his prime say today and was spewing that "interracial marriage" beliefs on us, it would be completely different because the times and social perception has changed a lot since the time Alu was boxing.
Never a fan. Muhammad Ali was such an awful person on multiple levels. Probably because he simply was a deeply troubled individual, but he doesn't really deserve the status he had.
But everyone deserves to RIP.

My heart's heavy, man. In what way?
My father had an interesting analogy about Ali. By the way, he always said the smartest athlete ever was Kareem but 2nd was Ali.
My dad died in 99' and he was a surgeon. I remember my dad saying that Ali was using counteracting logic through psychiatry to send a message to the people. By this, he meant that Ali wasn't a racist instead he was so cunning that he used his public image and voice to show the world how racism is wrong. People hate the man because he said a lot of racist things but they hated him more because he could publicly express his opinion to the world as a black man. Many white people hated him for his comments and arrogance, but all he was trying to do was show the white people how they made black people feel for decades.
It's a very interesting perspective and I agree with his view.

It's interesting, but it's just apologetic. There's not real evidence for this. You're not a hardcore Nation of Islam member for 15 years for reasons of reverse psychology. There is enough evidence to know Ali was a hardcore racist long before he was famous.
But truthfully, the racism doesn't even bother me. As someone mentioned, you always need to take context into account. It's ignorance, it's growing up in a racist society, he's a product of his time.
However, how he treated is loyal friend and benefactor Joe Frazier is absolutely beyond disgusting. How he treated his wives and his family is absolutely disgusting. And to present yourself as some honorable philosopher and a religious moralist while behaving in this manner, it's hypocritical and gross.
These are all things that are well known and I didn't mean to go into it in the man's death thread. You can write of a lot of character flaws (even though Ali's life is riddled with them) off as "nobody's perfect", but hey since you asked, that's why I'm not a fan.

very charismatic individual !!!!!!!!!!!!
My father and several of his generation in the 60's hated him , because he did not want to serve his country.
This was the generation that fought in WW2 and Korean wars.
But all things considered , he introduced USA to the Muslim life and ways.
Jabbar jumped on board as well.
I will never forget the fights between Frazier and him.
They were colossal.
I was always in favor of Frazier , because Smokin Joe was always the underdog.
To show how much America loved this guy -
Atlanta Olympics - He was the surprise torch bearer lighting the flame.....

Again, I think it helps to have some context, I understand with our generation we automatically think we're experts because we Googled something, but Ali's more controversial statements came as a member of the NOI which he later left.
His funeral service which will take place next week was personally planned by him and will be an inter-faith service with even Senator Oren Hatch invited to represent Utah Mormons. This guy was a citizen of the world and evolved a lot on issues, but at his core he just wanted to be respected as a human being, which is not a luxury afforded to a lot of black people growing up in the deep South in the 40s/50s.

YOUR points are fully valid.
But MY point is the average lefty affords ZERO room for context when critiquing the social views of others, PERIOD.
By their own criteria, he is simply a racist, homophobe, and mysogynist. Context shouldnt matter, apologies shouldnt matter. Because they do not afford these things to any white persons whom they criticize. Affording them to others is pretty much institutional racism at its very definition. Which is what the left is about, of course.
I'm heading down to his funeral. Lots of sad people in Louisville today.

You're wrong on multiple levels. Ali may have been cocky but he really knew how to back it all up. That's why he's the greatest of all time, and honestly he was just as great of a human. The man has helped a countless number of people with his massive charity work.
Try growing up in an era where your race was hated by many. Muhammad Ali stood up for his people and spoke out what he believed him. Some may look at him as just a legendary boxer, but he was much more than that. Much more.

Hey, there are people that were bullied by blacks as youths. They couldnt get away with being publicly racist. There are people whove been gangraped or had family members killed by blacks. But if they tried to classify all blacks as x or y, theyd be the ones publicly mocked and ridiculed and called ignorant.
Ali classified all white people as devils. He said interracial marriage was disgusting. He derided homosexuals. MLK grew up in the same era, did he do that? Did Clarence Thomas do that? Did Bill Russell do that?
Why does Ali get a pass? Where are the liberals to call him a hateful bigot for his opinions?
I want to know. I want to know why there's no consistency. Hate is hate, ignorance is ignorance, right? Or are these things relative, depending on race? Do we require lower standards for some groups than we do for others?
