I really dug the piano in the beginning, is that a sample?

The mood was gloomy which I liked and the drum pattern was perfect. It was minimal but still had a lot going on and fit the beat perfectly.

The piano sounded like someone with no musical training sat down and hit random keys until they got something they liked. But, bear in mind that I have no musical training, so there could be something I'm missing.

I don't have a problem with that. I think it's cool that anyone can make music pretty easily, but the piano intro didn't sound good at all, to me.

It got better from there and had a nice atmosphere to it in the end.

True, technically the piano sounded off and how you described it. But that adds to the beat's mood.
