hes more of less been doing this the past 3 years, but just not full-time. yes, it works and will continue to work, but factor in his decline in athleticism and no midrange game, hes becoming more predictable (easier) to guard. and honestly, his "play making" isnt otherworldly enough for him to be dominating the pace and offense as much as he is doing.
put a strong defender a step back from him, when he drives have the help crash while still playing the passing lanes and lebrons in trouble

They need to trade Love, move LeBron to the 4. Get a 3 point shooting SF who can guard 4's.
Move Kyrie to SG and get a defensive PG who can spot up.
