He is indeed the Cavaliers garbage man and motor guy. He didn't complain or whine about his role when he kept getting switch out of the starting lineup and kept playing through it. His play has earn him his contract two straight Finals in a row. Without his play in 2015 the Cavs don't even win those 2 games.

He was quietly the third guy in the "Big 3" during The Finals. It was a horrible matchup for KLove, but the perfect matchup for Tristan. He is exactly the kind of player that you need to beat Golden State. He can play either big or small. He can literally defend 1-5 with varying degrees of success. He's shown an incredible ability to either stay in front of Curry or push him into the areas of the floor where he's less comfortable.
Then, you factor in that he will physically pound you with screens (the way Bogut does for Golden State) while having the athleticism to either catch lobs off the P&R or get back under the basket to snag the offensive board.
If you could look at what Golden State has going for them (which is quite a lot) and say, "OK... I'm going to give you a LeBron James and Kyrie Irving who can both take over the scoring/playmaking for the team. Who do you want your third guy to be?"
It would look like Tristan Thompson. Ideally, you'd want him to be able to step out and hit an occasional 15-footer which he can't do yet or be a little better at reading the defense in space ala Draymond (he's getting better at this), but everything else is perfect. And, he only just turned 25.
The Cavs had two of the top four picks in the 2011 draft. They took Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson... in retrospect, just a huge moment in the history of the franchise.
Everyone, including myself, assumed the Cavs were taking Valanciunas with that pick. While Val is a good player with high upside, I don't think he would have helped at all against the Warriors and it would have been a nightmare defensively.
These are the times you look back at the draft and thank god they made the decision that they did.
